Zwift Year in Review 2025

2025 was a busy year for Zwift, which means it was a busy year for us at Zwift Insider. We published over 650 posts last year covering important Zwifty news and tips, but we only scratched the surface. There are always more stories to tell!

Zwift turned 11 this year, and inside sources tell me subscriber numbers and corporate financials are strong as we head into 2026. Streamlined onboarding, purpose-built hardware, and training platform partnerships have helped Zwift become even more accessible and useful in recent years, and the end result is lots of new riders in Watopia.

This is my look back at all things Zwift for 2025. Enjoy the ride!

New Roads

Some of France’s new cobbles

Zwifters love new roads, and two expansions were released in 2025. First, France got some fresh cobbles in early April, then New York more than doubled in size in October.

29 routes were released using these new roads, but Zwift added a total of 60 new routes to the game in 2025. That’s a lot – way more than past years, in fact. Zwift seems to have decided since they can’t build new roads fast enough, they’ll make more routes on existing roads to satisfy all the badge chasers.

Here’s the full list of routes added this year:

Cauberg The Netherlands 0.8km 57m 7.2%
Col de la Croix Saint-Robert France 5.7km 346m 6%
Col de la Madeleine France 14.3km 1118m 7.8%

Oude Kwaremont Belgium 1.5km 64m 4.2%
Poggio Italy 4.3km 136m 3.2%

No new climb portals have been added since April 2025, though, leaving me wondering when Zwift will add fresh climbs.

Major Events

This year, Zwift replayed some popular events, while totally revamping/rebranding others. Without going into too much detail, here are the big new events I think were most worth mentioning:

  • Tour de Zwift: the biggest annual tour on the platform, because it happens at the Peak Zwift! 2025’s Tour included the first-ever Ultimate Challenge: riding all three routes for all six stages to earn additional unlocks.
  • Zwift Games: The second edition of the Games brought out lots of racers, and elite riders battled for the largest total prize pot ever on Zwift.
  • Zwift Big Spin: This fun ride series saw the return of the prize wheel and the introduction of the first-ever BMX bike to the game.
  • Tour Fever: As the Official Training Software Provider of the Tour de France, Zwift has held Tour Fever events in past years. This year was no different, with a Climb Portal Challenge and other special events surrounding Le Tour.
  • Zwift Unlocked Tour: This tour was sort of a replacement for the Tour of Watopia, awarding double XP and a cool new urban kit as riders took on new routes across several maps, including New York’s expansion.
  • Zwift Camps: Zwift organized a three-camp series this year in leiu of the Zwift Academy. Zwift Camp: Baseline and Zwift Camp: Build are already completed, with Zwift Camp: Breakthrough coming in February.

Zwift brought back the zFondo Series this year, but using the same routes and kits as past years, making it fall a bit flat for Zwifters who have been around a while.

The Zwift Camps initiative shows potential and indicates that Zwift rightly understands that a Zwift Academy-style talent search can’t have the same structure as a community-friendly training camp. (Zwift didn’t hold a Zwift Academy this year, but said it will return in 2026 better than ever.) The concept of a community-friendly training series holds much potential, but Zwift has yet to support it with the necessary planning and front-end tools.

On the racing side, Zwift Racing League continues to be the biggest racing series on the platform, while Zwift’s ZRacing series (see the current series here) is the most popular scratch race series on the platform. Shameless plug: Zwift Insider’s Tiny Races are still the most popular race each Saturday!

While not a group event, Zwift’s Weekly Challenges are worth a mention here. Rolled out this year, the Route of the Week, Climb of the Week, and Workout of the Week featured routes, climbs, and workouts that awarded an XP bonus when finished. These have seen a lot of participation from Zwifters looking for a weekly challenge or a bit of direction on a free ride. And while Zwift has done away with the Workout of the Week due to low engagement, Routes and Climbs are still going strong (see calendar).

Lastly, Zwift Community Live deserves a mention. This was Zwift’s first-ever large-scale real-world meetup, a sort of “ZwiftCon” in Mallorca. It was an incredible experience for me and (I believe) just about everyone who attended (read my day 3 post). Unfortunately, I think ZCL may have been a victim of its own success. While it seemed like everyone who attended in 2025 thought the event was amazing and should be held again in 2026 on an even larger scale, what I’m hearing internally at Zwift is that it’s being scaled back to more of an “industry event” this year with mostly partners and influencer athletes attending. Folks at Zwift HQ who I spoke with agreed that the 2025 event was amazing, but expressed that it’s challenging, expensive, and frankly, too big of a distraction from their business goals to organize an even larger event for the general Zwifter population.

I won’t list all of Zwift’s major events for 2025 here, but you can certainly browse the events archive to see what was highlighted throughout the year, including many community-organized events.

Racing Changes

As I see it, there were four key developments in the world of Zwift racing for 2025.

First, Zwift Racing Score was released in earnest in October 2024, and really became the standard categorization scheme for Zwift racing in 2025. This includes Zwift’s use of multiple category ranges in their monthly ZRacing series, allowing riders to choose between categories where they rank near the top or the bottom.

Next, web-based standings were rolled out for the ZRacing series this year (see zwift.com/racing/zracing), giving riders access to a GC leaderboard at zwift.com for the first time ever. Is this Zwift moving away from ZwiftPower for race results? Absolutely. They want to simplify access to results and have the tech stack and branding all live within Zwift’s ecosystem. But will Zwift’s new web leaderboards ever have what it takes to host results for community races? That remains to be seen.

Next, Zwift rolled out Bike Upgrades in March, a feature that allows Zwifters to purchase a bike upgrade for a particular frame after putting in the time/elevation/distance to unlock that upgrade. This feature had the effect of driving riders to push hard to upgrade bikes for maximum performance, while also changing the way we thought about bike choice in each and every activity. Which bike do I choose for this free ride? This workout? This event? Bike upgrades changed everything.

Lastly, in July, Zwift announced they would not be hosting an Elite World Series in the fall. It wasn’t entirely surprising, given the challenges they faced in the previous year’s World Series as inaccurate data from approved trainers came to light, calling into question race results tied to real cash prizes. MyWhoosh has certainly stepped in to fill the gap for prize-driven elite racing, but without a significant viewing audience, Zwift’s concentration on the much larger community-racing market may turn out to be the smarter move.

Fitness and Training

Zwift began partnering with third-party workout and training plan providers near the end of 2024 via their new Training API, and finished that year with six partners. Now as 2025 draws to a close, that list of partners has more than doubled and includes TrainerRoad, the largest player in this space:

Seamless integration with a broad list of providers is a win for everyone, since Zwifters now have access to virtually unlimited workouts and training plans within Zwift.

Zwift has also turned their sights outdoors this year, which is a very interesting move. In April, Zwift announced that outdoor rides recorded with Garmin or Wahoo (and eventually Hammerhead) could be brought into your Zwift history to support Zwift’s new Fitness Metrics.

This is an important development, but there’s more to come. As I explain in this week’s post, Fitness Metrics is a part of something bigger:

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that these metrics are just one part of the more robust training platform Zwift is building. You can see the pieces coming together: first, third-party workout syncing brought all the big training plan providers to the table. Then revamped automatic FTP detection made it easier to set your power zones. Next, Zwift started bringing in outdoor rides and computing training metrics.

To what end? We don’t know for sure, but Zwift recently announced the limited release of daily Personalized Recommendations based on your habits, fitness, and freshness…

Hardware

Zwift released the Zwift Ride smart bike in June 2024, and it was an immediate success. In April 2025, Zwift released an adjustable crank arm option for the Ride, then in September, the Ride package got an upgrade as its bundled trainer (the Wahoo KICKR CORE) was replaced by the new KICKR CORE 2 with WiFi capabilities, race mode, Bluetooth bridging, and more.

Heading into 2026, I wouldn’t want to be a smart bike manufacturer. Zwift’s goal is to keep the setup experience simple and price low. Because in the end, they’re looking for subscribers, not hardware sales. So Zwift built the Ride as a budget-friendly solution for people looking to get into indoor cycling, and they’re able to sustain a profitable business while offering the Ride at a very low price.

Zwift released the new Click v2 controllers in September, effectively replacing the original Click and the Play controllers. The affordability of the new Click controllers and the long list of trainers supporting virtual shifting means we’re seeing a huge number of Zwifters shifting virtually nowadays.

New Features

Along with everything listed above, Zwift released or improved many game features in 2025. While most of these changes are small on their own, their combined weight helps drive the platform’s continued adoption. Here’s a complete list in chronological order:

Game Updates

Zwift kept a steady cadence of bi-weekly game updates for nearly all of 2025. Here’s the entire list of update releases – click for details:

Competitors

There are still just three companies in the indoor cycling app market that Zwift is competing against: TrainingPeaks Virtual, MyWhoosh, and Rouvy. Each is chasing market share in unique ways:

  • TrainingPeaks Virtual quickly built a reputation as a rapidly evolving, feature-rich, race-centric platform. This year they added the GPXplore feature so more iconic routes can be added to the platform, including a “My Routes” option of riding any GPX file. (And while Zwift chose to end their Free Monthly 25 km program this year, TPV has “Free Tuesdays” on the first Tuesday of each month, and offers other free riding opportunities. Seems like a smart way to entice people to try the platform who may have signed up months or years before…)
  • MyWhoosh hosted the UCI Esports Worlds for the second time this year and will be hosting it next year as well. They’ve added some new roads and features also, but in talking to other riders, clearly the main reasons people are on MyWhoosh are because it’s free, and you can win cash in races.
  • Rouvy has been advertising heavily this year, and features real-world footage that the other platforms lack.

While Zwift is still the massive leader in terms of user base, these other platforms keep Zwift on their toes by releasing new features and hosting events Zwift would like to see on their own platform. The good news is, we all benefit from this competition.

What’s next?

What’s coming soon to Zwift in 2026? Here are a few things I know about:

  • Personalized Recommendations: This feature tries to easily answer the question, “What should I do today to get stronger?” It’s already released (in beta) to a small cohort of Zwifters, and lots more will probably see it in the next month (read more here).
  • More Levels: Eric Min has said they’re coming soon, and internal sources tell me the same. I would expect to see level 150 or even 200 within the next month or two, although Zwift hasn’t promised any delivery date.
  • Refreshed Zwift Academy: Zwift said in their forum, “Zwift Academy returns in 2026, with work already underway to make the 10th edition our best yet.”

There’s definitely more to come in addition to what’s listed above, though. Zwift keeps me in the dark on some of their future plans, while others (including map expansions!) I get to peek at, under embargo.

Regardless, I’m looking forward to 2026 and all the Zwifty upgrades it will bring. Hopefully you are, too.

Great summary! Would love to see some improvements to the climb Portal in 2026 including completion badges, and being able to track climb portal times in the Companion app.

Would love to be able to track “Ride Ons” as far as how many I have given and received. Not sure why but I’m just a big giver of ride ons while I ride. Would like to see somewhere on the site a leaderboard of most given out, most received and also biggest difference between what one gives versus received.

I was surprised that the ride-on give/take was not included as a metric in the end-of-December SPINBACK 2025 personal video. I noticed “rideons exchanged”. WTHDTM?

This is a funny stat and has no real benefit but I would also like to see per ride how many I dished out and received and an overall count for the year.

they could have a badge or challenge to give out 1,000,000 ride ons.

I think there is a token benefit of drop boost earnings for 15 seconds with each ride on received. The badge idea is pretty good.

I dole out easily 10:1. Every person I pass or passes me gets one because it gives a sweat drop bump. Every bit counts and <43 level and people care it seems. But what do I know.

I’m not hung up on any of it since I ride for me not digital stuff. BUT it is a game and I am in it 2 hours a day so WTF why not maximize the pointless digital currency. At level 72 what do I have to fiddle with but binning sweat for an Espada … I have all the fast and light stuff at lvl5 in my unarchivable garage.

Awesome update Eric. It’s good to see all of Zwifts work quantified. My unpopular view is that if only 1% of zwifters are at level 100, why add more levels? Just make some uber plush bikes at a super high xp unlock. Im “only” at level 91 so what do I know.

One of the reasons they keep adding pointless new routes is so people can gain more easy XP. I think they know they trashed the system with recent changes and they are desperate to get people up the levels.

as a level 100 multiple times over any new levels are always a disappointment as they are easy to achieve. Plus with the bike upgrades I’m not sure what incentive they could offer people as I don’t want a new bike as it won’t be as good as my Halo bike.

OMG “as I don’t want a new bike”. That’s a #saidnocyclistever -worthy quote right there to kick off the year! Know what you mean though! =)

With Halo bikes they have made purchasing new bikes pointless unless you want to ride a slower bike because you have it in real life.

Most people who want to improve their performance in game will be looking at getting the Project 74 if they can afford it or the upgraded Tron bike. nothing else will make sense in races so the advise would be not to waste drops on bikes that don’t work towards these bikes.

i would of course purchase a new TT bike if one was faster than the current top in game TT bike.

Yeah, zwift insider testing shows that. I have both the Tron and P74 at L5, and combined with L5 on the Aethos, SL8 and the latest Dogma F, I agree. My point was more towards the classic n+1 bikes =) Here’s hoping for new and faster bikes in 2026, which I am looking forward to upgrade if/when they arrive!

Re New Levels: I’ll throw this out there…Why not reset levels every year whereby everyone starts at Zero? People would get to keep bikes, jerseys, socks etc that they have earned previously. Provided the current 807,000 XP requirement to get to level 100 was reduced to a more attainable number it would provide instant motivation for people to reach it each year. And solve what seems to be a continual issue with deciding how many levels to have to keep everyone happy and motivated.
Zwift already use this “reset” function for everything else. For example, the Tour de Zwift where what a person attained last year doesn’t affect their requirement to achieve this year’s tour/ultimate awards. Everyone’s motivated and riding the required routes like crazy, level 1’s and level 100’s alike.

Solid info as always Eric.
A few things that I would like to see from easy to hard (I’m guessing from the tech side)

Easy – I would love the ability to sell bikes in my garage that I don’t use anymore, just like IRL. Maybe get half your drops back. With people chasing more and more upgrades and trying to max out halo bikes, drops will come into play at some point for everyone. That and a bike not ridden is sad.

Second, I would love to see the ability to band and unband group rides during the ride. I’m sure it’s more complex than it sounds from the technical side of it but like many our IRL club does banded rides during the winter due to the wide range of abilities but we don’t have enough of the lower groups on zwift yet to warrant their own ride. It would be awesome to turn banding off for sprints, regroup, and turn it back on until the next sprint.

It would also be nice to be able to teleport between worlds so that your mileage keeps rolling without starting a new ride.

I’m sure others have already mentioned these. Keep up the great work on the site and here’s to another great year of Zwift

Zwiftinsider is my go to site each night as part of my wind down routine. I now know so many things about Zwift, thanks entirely to this website. So I wanted to say thank you very much for the quality content. I read pretty much all of it Eric.
PS, is that a rare error? I think you meant to say ‘you’re looking forward to 2026’ at the end of this article…. I am too. Ride on.

Good summary! I would like to be able to ride any climb portal rather than being limited by the monthly schedule. Also, there should be some kind of special recognition for Zwifters who do crazy climbing, etc.

When will the Meet Up functionality be fixed so you can use it for workout meetups (without using a workaround)? It’s about time to fix this! There are many who like to workout with friends – this would support bikers committed to getting stronger.

that’s really crappy about ZCL. i found this the other day: https://eu.zwift.com/products/zwift-community-live-2026?variant=47764756300027

emailed them, though, and they said it was invite only. feels wrong to call it zwift “community” live, but you could see that it was a big event to plan. on a lot of levels, the fact that it wasn’t dialed in was what made it so much fun, though!

I pretty much came to say the same thing. Is the event going to be rebranded to Zwift Influencers Live?

I think they tried to go to big to soon on an event like this. Should have spent a few years closer to home building it up.

A lot of these new routes they’ve created are completely uninspiring. Ven-10, macaron, glasgow crit six, etc. And several of the routes you’ve listed I don’t anybody has been able to ride in 2025: three step sisters, kaze kicker, etc.

Agreed, I only have routes that take from 30-75 minutes left so I do multiple per day and I feel like I ride essentially the same route in France every day it is on the calendar. Especially because it is always paired with Paris so I am stuck doing only the France routes. At least with the other pairings I can switch back and forth to avoid getting bored.

You can add any route you want (not event only routes) to your “my list” that appears on the home screen so you can ride almost any route on any day. Of course the world will have very few people if it is an off day.

STOP MOVING THE GOALPOSTS WITH THE DAMN LEVELS! I’m working my quads off getting to the max and every time I’m close they change the cap. So annoying!

also everything > 100 makes no sense, 100 is basically the standard in games

take a look at other games and add seasonal leveling or prestige or paragon or something

Completely agree. Don’t just add a bunch more levels, do something different.
I finally got to the top level this time after having the goalposts moved a few times previously.
If they really want more levels then just make them unlimited, and put everyone on the correct level for their xp. Then add in seasonal levels and ideally back-calculate what we would have got each previous season so we have a target to chase.

Thanks for the year in review, and the constant updates throughout the year Eric. I don’t remember the last time I visited zwift.com for updates – this site has been my go-to for years.
Any word on whether the Zwiftcast will have a come back? I know Simon, and his health, were the drivers of the release cadence, but I always enjoyed having a podcast about Zwift to listen to between rides on Zwift. If not, are there any other Zwift related podcasts anyone would recommend?
One more thing – I participated in my first Pizza Burner ride on New Years Eve and really enjoyed it – but felt that the pace was a bit too high for me. There were about 50-75 of us off the back, minutes behind the main group. Any thoughts about having different levels for the PB rides?

Don’t forget to mention biketerra as a competitor. I think they deserve some more attention for their simple approach.

Seeing that the Zwift Community event will be put on the shelf for 2026 made my stomach drop. The 2025 Community event was legitimately the most fun I’ve ever on a vacation and on the bike. Hopefully Zwift continues to open their eyes to see the inpact they can have with in person events, even if it’s not the scale of a trip to Mallorca. ❤️

Very disappointed to hear that the 2026 ZCL event won’t be for the many Zwift subscribers. I attended the 2025 event and it was simply amazing. I was so looking forward to being able to take another bucket list bike vacation with my son. It was so refreshing to see Zwift give back and provide such a great opportunity for those who are the backbone of their product. Now it sounds like its just another corporate event for the VIP types.

When you put it all together that’s a lot of new stuff last year. I’d forgotten about a lot of it as it as it becomes the norm pretty quick. This year I’d like to see an update to the companion app to put the game stats all in one place – just copy the stats screen we now get at the end of ride showing xp to next level, miles to next bike upgrade, challenge progress etc.

It feels like Zwift is setting themselves up for group rides on imported GPX files. If they figure out how to use Google Maps to generate virtual scenery, it would be a huge plus.

“more levels coming”

EVERY. TIME. I’m just about to reach the next max! I just crested into the 70s after expanding from 60 to 100!

Same for me, level 96 currently but I still don’t complain, I’d rather see the “goal” is pushed further away instead of reaching it. I feel like few weeks after I hit the maximum I’d be less motivated since I am at the level cap.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but you are nowhere close. Like not even in the same galaxy of hitting 100 yet. The XP curve after you hit 80 is staggering. I’m at 99 now and only by the grace of God can I maybe use the TDZ ultimate challenge to get to 100 before the cap is raised again.

Not sure new routes on old roads is that much of a value add.

Probably gives about the same effect if they would just do like the Alpe and add badges for 1,5,10 and 25 laps of a route. Save space in the badges section by just adding little bronze, silver and gold stars on existing badges perhaps.

Given that this would include 25 laps of uber pretzels and 4 horsemen and whatnot, it’s essentially unlimited carrots for the badge hunter crowd.

I’ve had a similar thought. It would be great to see the original route XP rewarded again after redoing a route X number of times. But make it diminishing so people aren’t just farming Tempus Fugit infinitely.

It’s been a good year for Zwift users IMO. Hopefully, the company is running well. Tbh, my biggest fear is that Zwift shuts down.

Will 2026 be the year some of these isolated UCI world championship courses get merged into a race world?

Innsbruck, Scotland and Yorkshire all being interconnected would really be interesting. Not to mention some of the awesome rides that could create.

London and France being merged together would also be nice. Or even just moving Paris into the France world.

Merging crit city into richmond also seems plausible as this would create some fun races. A few laps around the criterium and then a full lap around Richmond ending on the hill actually sounds pretty fun in my book.

My other wish is our avatars start showing expressions.
When I get a new PR my avatar should do a celebratory fist pump at least.
When we hit the snowy peaks it would be a nice touch for our avatars to put a jacket on.

It would also be nice to have an option to signal some type of distress posture. Push a button and your riders form visibly changes to indicate you are in need of help. A rider using the I am toast emoji is hard to spot since the icon only lasts a couple seconds.

I might understand why, but currently I do not why we don’t have good tools availble to start our own event. For example, I would like to smash out 25 laps of volcano circuit at some point for the badge. But never when I want to do it there are events up for it or robo pacers to draft of. Let me put a event up with a robot pacer so others can join as well.

Might be server costs that is preventing this since everyone will start alot of different events.

Why zwift doesn’t have a “Trophy Case” type of section to each members profile is still beyond me. It’s pretty much common place in most games where users can view their achievements, and display them to others if they wish. How cool would it be to see how many race trophies you have earned, or which jerseys you have “won” within routes.

What happened to the improved cheat detection that was teased in the ‘This Season on Zwift’? All lip service?

LOL, I’ve noticed zero improvement or change in the past few months. If anything it’s gotten worse as more users start using Zwift in the fall/winter again. Maybe step 1 should be requiring a heart rate monitor in the Zwift Epic Races? Just a thought.

I was reviewing an older entry (linked here: https://zwiftinsider.com/tsoz-garage-upgrades/) where there is a mention of upcoming “Garage Management” improvements supposedly to arrive in Winter 2024/2025. Did that occur? If so, it was so subtle that I didn’t notice. Anyone have any information on this?

Excellent summary Eric, hopefully 2026 will bring more expansions. Richmond is crying out for it as is Yorkshire. I could help with the route planning of that one 🥳😂.
Smaller improvements, ( I have too many to mention! ) would include the ability to save the group chat at the end of an event and teleportation of a dropped rider to the leader on a group ride.

Great look back at the year, Eric. Good to ride with you once in a while. Haven’t been able to get up at 4:30am to make the Pizza Burner recently. Maybe I’ll make it one morning soon.
The things I’d like see changed in 2026:

  1. Ability to turn off auto steering in races. I’m constantly getting bumped out of the draft and while that doesn’t matter as much in group rides, it can make a material difference in races.
  2. Ability to shut of the black name tags hovering above the avatars. They almost no functional value and sometimes block important information for the event.

Thank you for a great very important source of Zwift info. I likely wouldn’t be celebrating my 6th anniversary if it wasn’t for Zwiftinsider…
