Post below!
I have one left to climb but without having a record of what I’ve done, I don’t know which one it is! Darn sure know I’ve done the Tourmalet and Puy de Dome!! 😉
it shows up which ones i have done in the climbing portal mission page in the zwift game.
They only show the climbs completed for Stage 1 and 2, not every climb you’ve done.
It only shows the first one that you did in group A and group B. The rest aren’t marked complete
Strava segments is the only way to see them all
It doesnt for me. Just shows the first two I have done for the mission.
Interesting…I’ve done all 8 climbs and yet it only shows that I’ve completed 2 (1 of the 4 climbs in each of the 2 “stages”)…of course all one has to do to complete the challenge is complete one climb from each of the 2 “stages” of the challenge. It only shows that I’ve completed Col D’Aspin and Cote de Pike…those must have been the first climbs I finished from each “stage.”
You can also see your climbs in the ComApp.
Odd, I don’t see them over here. You on Android, or iOS? And what Companion app version?
I just went through my rides on companion- easiest way I could find.
Will the climbs disappear after a period of time?
This is really useful but I’m curious as to some of the numbers. For example here the Cote te Trebac is given as 4.6km but on your article about the portal a few days ago it’s 3.4km. A few of the others are different too.
Hi James,
In the early posts about the Climb Portal I used Zwift’s numbers for the climbs. On this page (and the detail pages for each climb) I use Strava’s numbers from the actual segments.
In the past I’ve found Zwift’s numbers to be less than reliable, so I generally default to what Strava says.
Ah right – thank you that makes sense. The ones I’ve ridden the numbers looked like what you had put here.
The ones above are correct distance, elevation and gradient. They match those in the actual Climb Portal.
Thanks for compiling this, Eric, really useful resource as always. Which one is your favorite or a “must-ride”?
I wouldn’t say I have a favorite yet, but the Puy de Dome is cool because if its corkscrew finish (and because I can still picture Michael Woods killing it in those final km in this year’s tour!)
Tourmalet is just a legendary climb (most-ridden climb in the TdF) so it’s gotta be ridden too.
Totally! Very much like the footage of this year’s tour stage, as you approach Puy de Dome from a long straight it’s hard to get your head around the scale and how close/far vs tall/steep it is. That kicker at the end is fun too. Brian – If you want to simulate a big stage, a facsimile of Stage 6 from this year would be Aspin, followed by Tourmalet is just about doable by mere mortals in a reasonable amount of time. If you want to go full Etape throw in a 2hr group ride first and do Aspin (?)… Read more »
I CRAWLED up the Tourmalet IRL last year and plan to do Zwift’s Tourmalet for the 1yr anniversary this evening. I absolutley love the climbing portal a) can get to the climb faster & b) more climb offerings
When will the Tourmalet appear again? Weird it’s not featured since they rode it today.
Waiting for spanish climbs during La Vuelta…
Adding the Stelvio Pass for some Giro d’Italia action would be another awesome addition.
Could I request you add estimated completion times based on some average w/kg? as you have on the alpe-estimates page? Think people would find it very useless for planning sessions, I know I would!.. Love the work you do!
Great idea! I’ll get to work on that and comment here when it’s done…
Speaking of add-ons. Would it be possible to know what route they’re connected to?
Done!
See it here: https://zwiftinsider.com/portal/col-du-tourmalet/
Can you please add a link to this page under Reference / Routes and Maps?
I fear that after a few other articles, this will fall off the front page.
Done!
I’m curious why people are doing these climbs in workout mode. The whole point is to experience what it FEELS like, especially since there’s no distinct visuals. If they’re hunting verts without the strain, then why not do the Alpe or Ventoux?
Live and let live.. But if you’re wondering why then I imagine it’s being used primarily as a way to pace and measure a prolonged effort. Some times for some people the signals the body sends or the way the mind processes them are less accurate or less aggressive then ones that training and experience shows you can hold. You actually see TdF and the like riders doing this now pressing ‘start’ or ‘lap’ on their bike computers before they lay down an uncomfortable effort they know from experience they will be able to sustain and/or recover enough from. So… Read more »
I don’t think you understood. In workout mode the gradient changes aren’t replicated by a smart trainer. So a workout would feel exactly the same on any portal climb, or any other climb in Zwift for that matter. For example, if you hit a 17% grade, but you’re in a 5 min recovery section of a workout like 125w or something, you’re not getting the 17%.
That said, I guess maybe you could rack up easy verts quicker there, in pursuit of the Tron bike?
Ok, so we’ve got our wires crossed: for you the whole point is the feedback felt in your legs at incline as determined by the resistance a smart trainer puts out, and possibly by the angle your bike raises to if you have some models. 1) There are other ways to do this — with gearing for example (e.g. https://zwiftinsider.com/trainer-difficulty-granny-gear/ as linked again recentiy by Eric. You can also adjust your bike angle if you feel that’s super important to the ‘feel). 2) There are other ways of designing/structuring workouts – and these can be refined by testing them on… Read more »
Because they want to, mainly. But your assumption about what other riders are feeling during a workout is flawed in two very important ways. First, just because people are in a workout doesn’t mean that they aren’t feeling the terrain. ERG mode can be turned off for workouts. In that case, the terrain provides the resistance just like in a free-ride. Then the power settings in the workout become targets to hit by changing gears and pedaling effort just like in real life according to the terrain. It is also possible to put a free-ride block into a workout that… Read more »
I’ve noticed the power it gives you when you get to the top of the climb in game is wrong. I don’t know if it’s including the lead in when it calculates the average power number perhaps? I’m going by the Strava numbers instead
Yeah, it’s including your entire ride, not just the climb. Hopefully Zwift fixes it soon.
Thanks for clearing that up. Got very confused when I just saw your estimates for Cote de Domancy. Zwift told me I did the equivalent of exactly 4.0 which according to your list is 12min. I finished in 10:15 though.
Yeah this is super annoying and such an obvious oversight. Very surprised this didn’t get ironed out in seconds.
Why are there different Strava segments if started in Watopia or France? Why different GPS data? They should have thought of that before. So you cann’t battle with friends on the easy way and have to clarify which portal with which climb. 🙁
anyone tried freewheeling the descents on all of these? do you get all the way down like on AdZ or do you have to pedal to get over some hump? looking at everesting feasibility =)

Changes to Portal Finish Line Image

Rode my first portal today-Aravis. Surprised to find an arch at the end of each of the 9 segments and even more so to receive three 250xp bonuses on the way up. I can’t remember the last time I received one! I’m not sure if this is because it was my first portal or it is some kind of incentive to get people to try them. Quite handy though!
Will the result from the climbings be shown in ZP?
Love the climbs btw! Only one left to do 💪
Hi,
Is it still possible to sign up for the climb portal concept to have acces to all the climbs ?
Hey Eric, would you please add the climb category rating to the master list chart? I think that would be helpful.
Hi….I must be a bit thick….but i have found and completed the Tourmalet, but apparently that portal closes and i haven’t even seen the others!! How do i find them?
Scroll down on the homescreen to the bottom under “Just Ride”. Leftmost card should be the Portal climb of the day. You can also access it by pulling up the list of routes by clicking the globe at the top-left of the homescreen which takes you to the list of available worlds.
Thank you Eric. Great site by the way….only just found it
In July only, the first 8 climbs were all available at the same time and you could choose which one you wanted to ride. Now, only one climb will be available per day as shown in the schedule available here: https://zwiftinsider.com/climb-portal-schedule/
Aah that explains it then. Thanks for replying
I’m a little disappointed that only one climb at a time is available now that the first month is over. Having done all of the initial 8 climbs, I would like to be able to go back and do Aspin/Tourmalet in succession like the TdF and see how that really feels! The monthly schedule seems very limiting. Also, the badges are not retroactive!! 😤🤣
The badges ARE retroactive. My bot account had all three when I first opened it up after the update.
Will they make it so that we can choose whatever climb we want at anytime, and eventually be able to ride them in succession?
Hei, will it count to the new badges if i turn after exiting the portal and climb again or do i have to start the portal from the menue again ?
Climb Portal climbs don’t award badges anyway, so it’s sort of a non-issue.
Waiting for the climbs to the Passo stelvio in both ways, from Prado and from Bormio ;))
I take it back! The first time I logged in after 1.45 update there was no badge for 8 climbs😒. Next login however – there it was! Rode Crow road twice to check and, sure enough, 10X badge popped right up👍
Where did Sa Calobra go ? 😉
Found out it’s a “test climb” at this time, so removed it from the list. Hopefully they’ll take it live someday, but it won’t be really soon.
Is there a similar list, but with distance and elevation in miles and feet?
@eric, I think the average gradient on the Ordino is too low. It’s closer to 5 than that (4,96% to be precise)
Good catch. I think I took the number from Zwift’s data… it gets a bit confusing when you start mixing Strava and Zwift. Anyway, I updated it so the numbers match up.
