Zwift version 1.71 begins its phased rollout today. This update includes lots of new route badges for runners to earn (including two new run routes), plus some new short workouts for riders. See details below…
New Fitness Jumpstart “Lite” Workouts

Zwift added five new short workouts to the New Workouts Collection. These are shorter “Lite” versions of the workouts from the Fitness Jumpstart collection.
Note: these will not be visible in game until August 8.
New Run Badges

Zwift threw a bone to the runners in this update, adding two new routes (with badges):
They’ve also added badges for 8 existing routes:
- Hilly Route Reverse
- Champs-Élysées
- Lutece Express
- Cobbled Climbs
- Queen’s Highway
- Mech Isle Loop
- Glasgow Crit Circuit
- Loch Loop
Challenge Progression Added
Your selected Zwift challenge (Everest, California, or Italy) is now shown in the Challenges section of the home screen, along with a progress indicator. (Zwifters who have completed all three of these challenges will not see this card.)

Clicking the challenge card pops up a window showing your progress details:

Now all we need is that 4th challenge!
New Road Surface
If you’re riding through Watopia’s Fuego Flats, you may notice the pavement turns to a lighter color just before the desert start pens:

Zwift’s art team has been working to visually refresh road textures around Zwift. They’ve changed the look elsewhere as well – on wet roads, and “fresh” roads – but the desert is the most obvious. (Before you ask: don’t worry. This is just a visual change. It doesn’t change the Crr values!)
Here’s a comparison showing the old surface and the new, just outside of Saddle Springs:

More Release Notes
Zwift provided notes on additional tweaks and bug fixes in this update:
- Fixed an issue where previous PRs may not be displayed when riding a Climb Portal route that was previously completed.
- Fixed a visual issue with the minimap that could occur when teleporting from Oh Hill No to Alpe du Zwift (and vice versa) in Watopia.
- Fixed an issue that could potentially cause black squares to appear in-game on some devices.
- Fixed a crash that could occur in low memory conditions.

That’s great! I run a lot outside right now but I love to see new routes for runners.
Are there any news about the HUD change? I believe the last news from Zwift was “summer”?
It’s coming but Autumn looks more likely now.
Glad to see running get some love!
Another update with… nothing.
Yeah, totally disappointed with the last two updates. They were more patches than updates for riding part of the game to be honest. I would appreciate if they would replace some of dirt roads with a shiny new tarmac.
New routes for runners. That’s something.
I like it when Zwift adds things that I wouldn’t think of since its not my thing.
I want (need) Zwift to survive and while there’s always talk of ‘why X and not Y now?’ … while sure at any one point in time there may be a zero-sum type situation (the various teams/role in ZHQ can only do what they have time and the strategic priorities internally drive them to do), ultimately ‘we’ are what can keep/make the ‘sum’ bigger (or smaller),
i’m all for a ‘big tent’ approach where they have a ‘diverse’ subscriber base globally, multi-sport (the runners in this case), and embracing (as i believe they have) more of the range of performance levels (WHEN in shape I’m mid-B power which means i can find anything (super easy to super hard) rides…increasing the ‘density’ of pace bots on lower w/kg power (impressively) was unexpected (again by me) but really smart given the overall pyramid like of course demographics.
There is always a tension between spreading themselves too thin vs to narrowly focusing on their core area (i took out my stab at describing it).And none od us will ever be fully satisfied. Some want new roads (wow i was already in heaven on Jarvis one loop), others to have some areas of function really fixed or honed, Ultimately there are endless lists of those. While there’s things I disagree with (they work as intended disagree with plan that was executed well as finalized prodict (but am in tiny minority there and absolutely have gotten philosophical about the way most people like these areas (that I’m not getting into here old news).I’m just happy to be on Zwift and as much as they can grow the overall pie despite specific complaints raised as always, the happier I am and the more they’re ABLE (I’d hope) to do even more.
Hasn’t been discussed much (at least that I’ve noticed) since the initial emergence, but I wonder how impactful the hand-cycle addition has been. I see that as no matter the numbers perhaps it’s a obvious prior ‘gap’ that maybe overall with many other things strengthens their ‘diverse’ portfolio of users and/or there’s things that are needed sometimes that don’t bear obvious fruit early but may add synergy to the overall growth (or post covid stability of users).
Making hardware simpler even if not ‘plug and play’? Huge. Along with reading what y’all here know, ZI’s wealth of riches of info, and more, i spent a lot of time over the years getting things to work…I’m good at that AND committed, but have been thinking its so hard for a new person to get on Zwift this WAS key (the hardware moves … trainer and now trainer frame etc). I’ve never met an unhappy ‘Peloton’ owner and learned to approach everything with ‘well if it works for you, then great!’ So no virtual shifting on my v5 kicker? Oh well I’ll live!
Zwift created something that was REALLY difficult and complicated to create but i felt it on my first ride on Jarvis almost a decade ago…accelerating onto someone’s wheel, my brain said ‘we’re RIDING.’ I think no one will ever be perfectly thrilled (or as much as me even lol) but if they satisfy most of the biggest roadblocks while building ‘new roads to growth’ (see what i did there 😉 I will continue to be occ a little frustrated but mainly joyous and often pleasantly surprised at what the ‘zFuture’ (?) holds which will be mostly interesting surprises.
P.S. Stuart 100%, AND i realized as this got long nice to keep it a little tucked in as a reply > new comment post 😉
The fourth challenge should be to ride all France routes. And put a spinner at the top of Ventoux also.
Ok great I completed that challenge ages ago – what’s next lol
Done INCLUDING ‘Rebel Routes.’ You? (True on my part but just pulling your leg theres a lotta road there those double loops are long (!). I ain’t fast and don’t get to actually brag very often mind you. If you haven’t seen check out the killer RR: all roads there in both directions THEN up Ventop…AND DOWN to main s/f there in town?! One other RR may be physically harder but mentally … THAT. Got super lucky swept up in a group ride foe most of one of the big outer loops before facing VT.
Not sure I’d notice the spinner through my salty tears dang its long and hard to get there, but a bonus beyond the ‘I’m so happy I’m done ‘getting here’? Sure. But MAYBE (just thought of this too) the spinner is at the 2/3rds way up Chalet? I’d love a boost from there (or chance of one …. riding wise or psychological).? What would be on it? Some campy stuff? The ‘Badger’ badge?
What about a badge for riding every inch of available road/pavement/sad/gravel/etc in every world on zwift (including event only worlds etc)? That might be fun.
As a biker and a runner, its great to see more parity between the route badges. Has always seemed like a quick win and an ask runners have had for a very long time. Great to see!
A ‘biker’?
You wear leathers, have a tash and ride a Harley, yes?
Here, on Zwift, we are cyclists and runners.
This update has sent my Zwift Hub back to changing the power reading each split second, making it very distracting on the screen. Please sort this out Zwift. It happened not long after the hub was launched, but was eventually fixed with an update.
Nic, are you seeing this in Game or Companion?
In game
Thank you. A few more questions so we can investigate further for you:
All firmware up to date. Bluetooth connection to my Apple 4K TV (it’s firmware is up to date too,) direct from the Hub. No in-game settings changed, but will check when I ride tonight to make sure its still set on 3 sec average.
Thanks! We’ll try to reproduce in the meantime while we wait for your confirmation on the in-game setting.
Alan, the update had reset my control panel to instant. Problem sorted by toggling back to 3 sec average. Thanks for your help.
Ride On, thanks for confirming Nic! Glad switching the setting back fixed the issue 🙂
We’ll look into what could have caused the setting to reset. See you in Watopia!
Eric, have i dreamed this or did i see something around “velodrome” being introduced at some point? if it was a dream, (Im copyrighting it) 🙂 i think it would be a great idea, we have the races and ladder leagues etc but taking an individual or team into a virtual velodrome to race over the track disciplines would be a such a game changer!!
That new road surface looks amazing!!!! I was a bit dubious about zwift after the price increase but having seen the new road surface in this update it’s obviously money well spent. Wonder if they’ll do trees next in the next update. Keep up the good work.
And more socks please!
Watopia to declare independence!
I would be impressed if they reduced the size of the Red Deer in London Parks…. They look almost like Dino they are so big. The largest red deer is only 6ft, these are more like Elk! 😳
Is the XP rewarded for running distance equal between miles and kilometers? I know they fixed it for biking but I haven’t found anything about running
They didn’t update it for running, so it still gives a slight advantage to people using metric.
I must’ve missed the bike correction. Are you saying that there is no longer an XP advantage to metric readouts?
Correct. 32XP per mile, 20XP per KM now for riding.
Can you get more detail on what the black square fix is supposed to address? The description is fairly vague. Are colored squares also eliminated?
Any chance we could get a oval cycle track like a velodrome for training?
Regarding the road texture update:
I did not find any particular mention in my quick and dirty search of earlier updates, so correct me if I am wrong, but to me it seems that there were consistent updates of the textures all around Zwift worlds lately, especially since the addition of the southern coastal roads in Watopia.
Is there any more detailed or summarized information on what changes were made to graphics, especially the more subtle ones we did or did not notice all?
(this could also include instances such as the first-gone and now-returned saloon in desert flats…)
I don’t have a post detailing this, no. Zwift is very unspecific when it comes to art/texture updates, for whatever reason. We sort of have to stumble across them to find them. That said, they did a big refresh of the top of the Epic KOM maybe 2 months ago… we talked about it.
But the art team is always at work improving existing worlds, and working on new stuff.
It looks like the art team have been very busy actually. I rode Snowman yesterday and all stone walls/buildings have been updated, much more detail in the tunnel network and other riders/groups are visible from much further away. Surprised Zwift haven’t made more of this, if it’s a ‘thing’.
Great. More running achievement badges that I’ll never attain to reduce my overall completion percentage. Is it too much to ask to have separate totals for cycling and running badges, and only combine both if the Zwifter actually does both disciplines?
Wasn’t the initial training API connection release supposed to be late spring? There has been no word on it and we are well into Summer now.
There was news on it last week: https://zwiftinsider.com/tridot-integration/
Sounds like more news is coming in the next month or two (more partners, etc).
Surprised to see that there’s no mention of a pack dynamics or road positioning update because, after getting this update on Tuesday, my teammates and I did a ladder race where we were constantly being pushed out of the draft and having to steer back into it (even if we weren’t bumped out by someone, we’d just drift out of the draft). 3-4 guys on the 5v5 race (on my team, didn’t ask the others) all noticed the same thing and said it was the most steering they’d ever done in a race. With a bug like that introduced, I was sure I was going to read here something about how they’d “fixed” something to do with steering or draft.
I actually experienced the same just yesterday, Paul. Pinged Zwift on it and they said there’s a bug in steering that is going to be fixed in a hotfix update very soon.
Has 1.71.0 been paused in the meantime, for a 1.71.1? I haven’t had the update on any device yet, which is unusual after 2 days
@Eric Schlange
Is there any official word on delaying 1.71.0? I had a failure during patching of an update (version not specified). I followed the recommended uninstall and re-install steps that I thought would get me to 1.71.0. After installing the “new” Zwift app, I found that the launcher version increased, but the app version remained at 1.70.0. Since then, I have been checking for an update. Still at 1.70.0 for a few days now. Note that support has been involved. No problems with that.
Yes, 1.71.0 rollout is paused because 1.71.2 is rolling out instead very soon, ZHQ tells me.
Thank you for contacting them. Your voice has a bit more impact. Glad to hear that there is a fix on the way. Also glad to know it wasn’t just in my head (ladder races always have my limit and a ladder race on Coastal Crown Loop – so hilly and curvy on top of being in the red – might have had me seeing things).
Noticed the road surface change and I like it. Some of the deep black stuff looks fake – even when you find it outdoors!
really looking forward for this update… finally some new routes and badges for runners…
… update is still still not available for iOS, AppleTV and macOS….me being so impatient with these things
On the homescreen under drops and next to level in upper right corner is a number that i new to me, what does t mean?
Next to the little flag? That looks like Racing Score.
https://zwiftinsider.com/racing-score-2024-launch/
Thanks Tom!
Will there be any changes in the workoutplans. So far i see untill now it keeps all the time the same and sad to see t isnt adaptive yet. Is there any plans that they look more better to the plans? Or it will keeping the same like now.
As I did not see any possibility for reporting a bug on the Zwift website, I give it a try here.
Yesterday I did the FPT TEST [STANDARD] on Yorkshire.
Usually there was at 1 third and 2 thirds wording to consider adjusting the power, but not this time.
Instead I got ten minutes before the end messages “one more minute” and ” ten more seconds” (or similar). This was confusing and not helpful for a proper test.
