Is this the new Watopia Flat Expansion?

Is this the new Watopia Flat Expansion?

Resident Zwift Hype hacker Jonathon Levie has shared recently uncovered new route data and images, and it appears to be the much-anticipated desert-themed Watopia Flat Expansion. Jonathon likes to keep his methods close to his chest, but his intel has always been reliable. According to him, Zwift HQ has “ridden it publicly” (referring to the new roads).

Here is where the new roads fit into Watopia’s existing map:

My guess is we’ll see that northwest island grow much larger when the expansion drops, much like we saw the beachfront expand when the running expansion arrived September 2018. Because no one wants to ride on bridges or in tubes for too long!

Based on the map above and what we know of new routes, this new expansion is approximately 10km (6 miles) long and quite flat.

What Are the Loops?

The two odd-looking loops are probably turn around spots for out and back style routes,

Dinosaurs?

Zwift’s own teaser for the new route included a dinosaur snippet at the very end. Will the community finally get much-requested dinos in game with this expansion? My guess is yes!

New Starting Pens

The new starting pen location will allow races to start on the new tarmac, providing an opportunity for super-flat, fast races out of the gate. Given the TT focus of these new routes, it makes sense to have a starting pen location allowing racers to complete a flat TT effort.

More Photos

The new route is desert-themed, but it’s a beautiful desert. As Zwift said in their Tempus Fugit Tour of Watopia route description:

We’re bringing a whole new climate to Zwift. A little bit of California here. A little bit of Arizona there. Some Utah. And a dash of Colorado. Shake well and serve. We can’t wait for you to ride it. Remember to stay hydrated and keep the dust out of your eyes.

New Watopia Routes – Coming Soon!

New Watopia Routes – Coming Soon!

Jesper over at ZwiftHacks has found info on as-yet-unreleased new Watopia routes. Most of the routes seem to utilize all or part of the upcoming flat expansion, and there is definitely a focus on TT rides based on the route names alone (I discuss this more below.)

Here’s a screenshot from ZwiftHack’s excellent routes page:

Whole Lotta Lava

  • 12.2km (7.6 miles) long
  • 160m (525′) elevation gain
  • 5 mile lead-in

This route certainly involves the Volcano KOM, but since that KOM involves 414′ of climbing the rest of this route must be quite flat.

The Uber Pretzel

  • 126.1km (78.4 miles) long
  • 2362m (7748′) elevation gain
  • Level Lock: 12

Bigger even then Watopia’s Mega Pretzel, this route adds nearly 20km and 700m of climbing to Zwift’s longest route. My guess is this route will include everything in the Mega Pretzel, as well as the new flat route expansion being released soon (see notes below).

Tempus Fugit

  • 25.1km (15.6 miles) long
  • 37m (120′) elevation gain

This route was announced for the Tour of Watopia, so we know it will be available by May 6th. “Tempus Fugit” is Latin for “Time Flees” (aka, “Time Flies”), and is actually the name of some TT races we’ve had here in Northern California. So my guess is this is a TT-friendly route. Here’s what Zwift says about the ToW stage:

We’re bringing a whole new climate to Zwift. A little bit of California here. A little bit of Arizona there. Some Utah. And a dash of Colorado. Shake well and serve. We can’t wait for you to ride it. Remember to stay hydrated and keep the dust out of your eyes.

At 1.5m of elevation gain per kilometer of distance, this new route will be the flattest in game. If you’re wondering why Zwift is releasing another flat route, just ride Watopia on a busy day and note how crowded the flat routes are. They get much more traffic than the hillier routes, so it makes sense to expand the list of flat options.

Bigger Loop

  • 53km (33 miles) long
  • 692m (2269′) elevation gain
  • Level Lock: 10

Probably this “upgrade” from the existing Big Loop route includes the new flat tarmac used in the Tempus Fugit route.

Out and Back Again

  • 49.3km (30.6 miles) long
  • 344m (1127′) elevation gain

An out and back route? I don’t think we’ve got one of those on Watopia at this point, so this is a bit novel for that reason alone. Chances are this involves the new flat expansion as well, since that expansion appears to be targetting TT work (and we know TT racers love out and backs).

Tick Tock

  • 18.9km (11.8 miles) long
  • 68m (223′) elevation gain

Another allusion to racing against the clock. This route will probably be based in the new flat expansion roads.

Exciting times! My guess is we’ll see these new routes available sometime in the next 3 weeks, possibly as soon as next week. Fingers crossed…

Teamwork at Morning Grind Fondo Race #10

Teamwork at Morning Grind Fondo Race #10

I’ve been racing the Morning Grind Fondo series for several weeks, and I certainly can’t quit now since I’m leading the B category overall. I’m not a particularly strong racer, but I have shown up regularly and finished with the front group consistently, and with a longer series that’s often all it takes to win.

Today’s race story is particularly worth sharing because of the teamwork aspect. I hope you enjoy it!

Having been on vacation for two weeks, I went into this morning’s race with a lot of questions. Did my diet of fine French pastries fuel fitness gains? Was two rides in 16 days enough to keep my legs fresh? Would a dodgy sleeping schedule lend itself to race-ready freshness?

I feared the answer was “no.” And I wasn’t wrong.

The First Three Laps

Four laps of Watopia Hilly were going to hurt even on a good day, and towing four extra pounds of pastry fat up that cursed wall would only amplify the suffering. That said, the first time up wasn’t bad. “I can do this three more times,” I thought to myself. Hubris.

We dropped half the field of 31 on that first climb, leaving a front group with a strong DIRT presence of Tim Ellis, Andrew Wright, Joe Randall, Mark McDermott, and myself. Knowing no attack would get away in the early minutes, I focused on recovery for the non-KOM portion of each lap, staying in the draft and conserving.

The second KOM hurt, especially when I had to chase back on at the end. (The continuance through that banner always gets me, since I’m already on the rivet.) We completed it 5 seconds faster than the first, and I set a new record for 1-minute heart rate… 186! (My max HR is 189, which explains the nausea at this stage.)

The third KOM wasn’t quite as bad, and while I was happy to still be in the front group of ~10 riders, I feared the final KOM because I knew some racers would throw down their hardest efforts here. And that’s exactly what happened.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

I crossed the fourth and final KOM banner 2-3 seconds behind the main pack, with nothing left to chase back on and quads starting to cramp. After spitting out a breathless, “I’m off the back” on our team Discord, I was almost ready to ease up and TT it home when I spotted two teammates coming up from behind. Tim Ellis and Andrew Wright had waited for me, and now they moved ahead, taking turns to pull me back to the group. Studs!

At the same time, Joe Randall and other DIRT riders in the front pack eased up, forcing other riders to push the pace if they chose to do so. This slowed the front pack, allowing us to catch on with a quick ~20 second effort. Teamwork.

Tim and Andrew pull me to the front

The Finish

The pace picked up on the final ramp into the Esses, and I was hanging with the pack but didn’t have much left. Hammered out the final sprint, cramping quads and all, but still finished in the back of the front pack.

6th overall… I’ll take it.

There are only two races left in this Morning Grind Fondo series, so I’ll be hitting those hard in hopes of keeping my top spot. Next week should be a good one for me since it’s on Richmond Flat. But the final race on Innsbruck Lutscher… that’s a terrible idea. I can’t wait.

Does the Tour of Watopia Schedule Work for You?

The Tour of Watopia is now underway, and there has been some discussion in the Zwift Community about the scheduling of ToW events. Zwift initially scheduled a handful of ToW events per day, stating they wanted to avoid trampling over community events. But when Zwifters complained that the sparse schedule made it difficult to participate, Zwift added more ToW events.

We’re Burning Rubber on Zwift Today

It’s April 1st, Zwifters!

Zwift traditionally does something zany for April Fool’s Day. In 2018 we played Paperboy, 2017 we had big heads, 2016 gave us the old-timey effect, and 2015 we rode big wheels on Jarvis. What about today?

Today we’re burning rubber, sort of a “Back to the Future” effect.

How do you do it? Well, I haven’t figured that out yet. It’s definitely based on effort level, but I’m not sure what the algorithm is, as I’m seeing flames activated at a range of w/kg and wattages. See if you can figure out how it works and comment below!

Oh, and if you want to see some real fireworks, join a group ride:
