Join an April Fool’s Day Event on Zwift

This is our 8th April Fools’ Day on Zwift, and each year ZHQ has come up with something fun for the community. Last year we were big wheeling, in 2020 we were transported to 1989, and in 2019 we were burning rubber. The year before that it was Paperboy. In 2017 we had big heads, 2016 gave us the old-timey effect, and in 2015 we rode big wheels on Jarvis.

This year Zwift has brought back the big heads from 2017. Here’s how they look:

Event-Only

In past years, the April Fool’s joke was applied to every Zwifter. This hasn’t always gone over well, because some poor souls simply aren’t up for all the silliness. So this year, Zwift decided to create a series of April Fool’s Day events, and have the silliness be confined to those events.

Fair play, we suppose, but it sort of takes the sting out of the “pranky” nature of April Fool’s Day when we have to join the events ourselves. They could have at least pointed all Zwifters to this helpful orientation video >

Regardless, if you want to laugh at yourself and others having giant heads, you’ll need to join one of the April Fool’s Day Runs, Rides, or Chase Races. They begin at 12:20am GMT Friday, April 1 which is 8:20pm EDT/5:20pm PDT Thursday, March 31. Enjoy!

I can see how the pranks might bother people when they take over the bikes, and people lose that element of strategy from their race. But big heads? Who doesn’t want that?

If they are gonna modify the equipment, then let’s get really silly: juggling unicyclers.

Really, some people need to get a life! If you can’t laugh, don’t ride, or better yet don’t complain. Sad day. I have been looking forward to whatever prank was being planned for some time now. 🙂 Let’s all breathe. Cheers Eric….big head hahaha 🙂

It would be awesome if our avatar could always have a big head (just yours). Would make it so much easier to pick yourself out of the group when everyone is in the same kit and on trons:)

The general event situation in which it’s hard to even find oneself in a crowd is… so obvious that, as a problem, it almost seems to be going without anyone mentioning it.

Hey, Zwift: video games have solved this one before. Also, I really don’t have to wear the same thing as everyone else in *every* event.

(Or a crowd surfing mode, where I didn’t have to pedal.)

I just don’t people sometime they take life and themselves too seriously. If you can’t laugh at yourself you need to figure out what your doing. You should have the events if you don’t want the pranks

Glad they actually listened and took onboard feedback from previous years. Don’t find the april fool’s stuff amusing at all, just irritating – its like that very unfunny uncle who thinks that he’s the life and soul of the party when he wears a “crazy” tie. Its especially annoying when Zwift spends time implementing nonsense like this too when so many bugs go unfixed for so long.

I second that. I did a chase race this morning too and the only thing I got was way more connection drops than usual 😀. Not even a results page at the end of the race…

I thought the silly chaos was charming and was really looking forward to it. Disappointed it’s event only. It was a one-day break from the everyday and would’ve been especially welcome this year.

Chase was entertaining when we all realised we couldn’t see the other cats to actually chase them! Zwiftpower Live to the rescue, well, kinda..

Put me firmly in the “person with no sense of humour” camp. I really did not appreciate the “back to 1989” event in April 2020. I didn’t care about the 80s style riding outfits but the blurry video was nauseating on a big screen. I still remember it and I’m still angry about it. It ruined my ride, on a stressful day where we were all getting used to the scary new reality of lockdowns and I really needed that ride for my mental health.

Was so excited to see what this year’s prank might be (I was so totally fooled by the VCR prank that I restarted the app like three times) but there was nothing this year. Had to go online to find out it was limited to certain events. Sad that some had to spoil it for most.
