Wear Your Goggles for April Fools’ Day 2024 on Zwift

This is our 10th April Fools’ Day on Zwift, and each year ZHQ has come up with something fun for the community. For the last two years we had special April Fools’ Day events, and in 2021 we were big wheeling. In 2020 we were transported to 1989, and in 2019 we were burning rubber. The year before that it was Paperboy. In 2017 we had big heads, 2016 gave us the old-timey effect, and in 2015 we rode big wheels on Jarvis.

This year Zwift has a new surprise – VR goggles. Ha!

Removing Your Goggles

Not interested in being silly? Visit your garage and choose the no headgear option, and the VR goggles will go away.

The rear-view mirror glasses option apparently does not do VR goggles either.

So, while you are riding in a VR world, and your avatar is wearing VR googles, does the avatar see the real world?

Its a shame that Zwift wastes time with things like this instead of implementing things we actually want and request.

I think I just got lucky as I don’t ride with any head gear or socks so it never appeared on my Avatar.

Sadly is was very buggy for me (lots of random headsets flickering about and obscuring the view). Otherwise it would have been a fun idea. I was hoping they were going to announce VR headset support though.

I really wanted all the gear in Big spin the bike and the kit that represented all the different countries. I did all four events. They was all nice.

I’m still mad about the blurry “back to 1989” thing and that was four years ago 🙂

In the early years of Zwift, I remember having the opportunity to use VR goggles while Zwifting at one of the Zwift “shows’. Using VR goggles on Zwift was amazing a true game changer!

I did that also, in the Rapha store in San Francisco. It was Oculus googles. I found them disorienting, generating a motion-sickness type response, as when my avatar leaned into corners, my brain was expecting the sensations from leaning into an actual corner. I don’t experience this with the more detached perspective of the laptop screen.

I do find it interesting they scrapped the project, though. It generated a lot of interest in the crowd, among them Barry Bonds and Mari Holden.
