The GCN Erg Mode video seemed quite good to me. Very basic language was used to describe what is whole point of it is.

I just learned that ergometers refer to exercise machines equipped with an apparatus for measuring the work performed by exercising. Historically, rowing machines.
Measurement Units
Erg is more commonly a unit of measure for energy. 1 erg is 100 nano joules. Where joules are used in Physics text book problems.
But I tend to think more in watts when on a trainer…
