In March, Zwift adjusted the performance of bike frames and wheels in the game, aligning them more closely with real-world performance differences between various bikes and wheel types. At the same time, they released the bike upgrade feature, allowing riders to put in work to make their bikes marginally faster.

While I’ve spent a lot of time unpacking these changes on the road bike/tarmac side of things, I really hadn’t tested bikes on Zwift’s dirt surfaces until recent days. And the results surprised me! Let’s dig into how various bike types perform on Zwift dirt today.
First, a Wheel Important Note
The 1-hour time gap data below is based on the speeds of our baseline bike, which is the Zwift Carbon with 32mm Carbon wheels.
In Zwift, you can’t put the 32mm Carbon wheels on a gravel bike. Instead, you must choose between several gravel-specific wheelsets. The nice thing is, Zwift keeps it simple: all the gravel wheels currently perform the same.
When it comes to mountain bikes, there is just one wheelset you can use, named “Zwift Mountain”.
Because of how wheels work, for the data below, we paired each frame type with a specific wheelset so the comparisons would be useful:
- Gravel Bikes all used the Zwift Gravel wheels
- MTB all used the Zwift Mountain wheels
- Road bikes all used the ENVE 8.9 wheels (we tested a few top-performing wheelsets, and these turned in the fastest lap times)
- Zwift Concept Z1 (Tron bike) used the Zwift Concept wheels
Time Savings Over 1 Hour at 300W (Stage 0 vs Stage 5 Frames)
Let’s begin with a simple chart that clearly illustrates the performance delta between gravel, mountain, and road bikes on Zwift dirt. This chart illustrates the time difference between each bike and our baseline bike (Zwift Carbon with 32mm Carbon wheels) over 1 hour of riding on the Jungle Circuit at 300W (4 W/kg).

Takeaways
First things first: there is a big performance gap between gravel bikes and MTB+road bikes on the dirt. This gap is bigger than it’s ever been, thanks to changes Zwift made in their March update.
In fact, the gap between gravel and road bike performance in the dirt is approximately twice what it used to be. (After Zwift made road bikes roll faster in the dirt in November 2023, road bikes were around 1 minute slower than gravel bikes across an hour of riding. Now that gap is more like 2 minutes.)
The performance gap between the fastest and slowest gravel bikes has also widened. Formerly, the difference between the fastest and slowest bikes was ~20 seconds. Now it is ~38 seconds. (This lines up with the changes Zwift made to road bikes, where they stretched out the bell curve of performance so there was a larger delta between the fastest and slowest bikes.)
Toggling between stage 0 and stage 5, we can see that fully upgrading a frame doesn’t change its performance relative to other frames of the same type (the fastest gravel bike remains the fastest gravel bike, etc.). But a few of the road bikes do overtake some mountain bikes, as the delta between MTB and road shrinks at stage 5.
Lastly, this data shows that mountain bikes are never the smart choice if you’re looking for the fastest setup in a Zwift ride. In the Jungle, mountain bikes are just barely faster than the road bikes (at stage 0 at least). But mountain bikes are significantly slower than road bikes on all other surfaces, and gravel bikes clearly outperform them on dirt. So the mountain bike has no home in Zwift currently, unless you’re looking to ride with a group and make the effort more challenging.
Time Savings Over 1 Hour at 150W (Stage 0 vs Stage 5 Frames)
This chart uses the same bikes as the first chart, but the tests were run at just 150W (2 W/kg) to see how performance deltas change at lower speeds.

Takeaways
Wow! The performance deltas between each type of frame are much larger at 150W vs 300W. ~249 seconds separate the Cervelo Aspero from the S-Works Tarmac, almost twice the gap (~128 seconds) we saw at 300W.
The mountain bikes clearly outperform the road bikes at this power level as well, with the Scott Spark RC World Cup besting the S-Works Tarmac by ~83 seconds at 150W vs ~10 seconds at 300W.
If you weren’t sure about the advantage of a gravel setup on Zwift dirt, this chart makes it clear.
Overall Conclusions
The changes Zwift made to bike performance on dirt surfaces are quite substantial. And I think they’re good changes:
- Road bikes didn’t really get slower on the Jungle dirt, and that’s good – because nobody likes going slow on Zwift
- Gravel bikes got faster, making them a viable option in more scenarios. This adds a strategic bike choice element to certain Zwift races/rides.
Racers will want to consider the implications of Zwift’s updated dirt performance and polish up their mid-race bike swapping technique for courses that include significant dirt stretches.
What’s Next
Given the impressive performance of gravel bikes on dirt, I will conduct additional tests on key dirt sections to determine where using a gravel bike (or swapping mid-ride) makes sense. We’ll especially take a look at Makuri Island’s Temple KOM, which is a mostly dirt climb that forces key selections in races on that map.
I’ll also test how gravel bikes now perform on the gravel surface type, which currently only exists on the Sgurr Summit North in Scotland.

Yes! Single track with rocks and roots where other bikes would suffer. I am a mountain biker that Zwifts in winter and when it rains and would love something more mountain bike related. Maybe a mountain biking Repack Rush?

It seems like Zwift introduced gravel bikes in response to real world popularity, which put the nail in the coffin for mountain bikes (especially with the latest update) … but honestly, gravel bikes seem homeless as well. Outside of the Jungle Circuit and a few other limited sections, they have nowhere to play. And how many Jungle Circuit lap races are there? I can’t see much point in selecting much less upgrading either. Interested what your next article on bike swap scenarios reveals.
I would love to see Zwift introduce new routes dedicated to gravel AND singletrack like you suggest, where road bikes have zero place. Give gravel and MTB their own purpose in the game, make them worth all the time and virtual expense to upgrade. Zwift could offer a whole series of gravel and MTB races, from short track XC with punchy climbs to a virtual Unbound! That would offer even more variety and maybe attract more riders. And then Zwift could expand drop shop offerings for gravel and MTB. Hopefully that’s all in work in some dark corner of Zwift …
Why couldn’t we have a world with just gravel roads? Then there would not be a should I – shouldn’t I typed of dilemma.
They need to bring back Repack Ridge. The MTB would be great there.

An update on Gravel setup on Tarmac please.
I am grinding my Gravel (Crux) bike following Pacebots and I think it ill take approx 40% more time to ride it to L5, vs the roadies. With SL8, I have no problem riding with Constance. With the Crux, even Maria wears me out.The faster the speed, the harder it gets. With Miguel (1.8) I need to do roughly 1.9wkg in the draft. With Maria (2.2) I need to do almost 3wkg. Yumi on Gravel is harder for me than Constance on a roadbike

They aren’t. They’re actually a bit faster than they used to be, because Zwift made them more aero in March. They used to be about 3.5 minutes slower over an hour of riding on flat tarmac vs the fast road bikes… now they are about 3 minutes slower.

If you’re looking for more tests to run, I’d love to see these two tests:
1 – Test an example of each type of bike (all-around / distance, climbing / elevation, and TT / duration) at each intermediate upgrade level. It takes months to fully upgrade a bike, so it can be useful to know if a Level 5 SL8 is faster than a Level 3 Aethos up AdZ (for example).
2 – Run a test on a mixed terrain course (something like The Muckle Yin). This test on the Jungle Loop is close to that, but the gravel reduces speeds.
I think you want zwifterbikes.app – it lets you set specific frame/wheel combos to specific upgrade levels and compare them. Judicious use of “favorite” feature on the combos you want let’s you filter in to the specific comparison and see them side by side
Eric — Very interesting results! Since many courses aren’t pure dirt, I would be curious to see an analysis split between dirt/tarmac similar to the one where you compare road bikes across aero/climb. How would road bike vs gravel bike compare on a mixed course?
What about testing the Cannondale bikes? Seems like they were intentionally left out.
Which Cannondale bikes?
System Six and the Lab71. They do not have all of their lineup to compare so I get that, but at least for the road comparison I would like to see those two.
I’ve included them in all the road bike test data. The bikes included in this post are really just representative bikes… the fastest all-arounder (S-Works SL8), the fastest climber (Aethos), and the most aero (Canyon Aeroad 2024).
Adding the Lab71 to the list wouldn’t add anything really useful, and the System Six is an even poorer performer, so I left it out. But you can see their complete data here: https://zwiftinsider.com/charts-frames
Need more gravel and technical dirt
Ouch, bigger difference between the Aspero and Crux than I expected. I’ve been leveling my Crux as my third Specialized bike.
Maybe I should bail and do an easier mid range bike. It stinks the entry level Specialized bikes are now unavailable.
I’d stick with the Crux. It’s still the second fastest, only a few sec slower in stock form, and the upgraded Crux is faster than anything except a fully-upgraded Aspero. How many scenarios do you think you’ll be facing and losing time to one of those? Plus, the Crux gets you one bike closer to a Halo bike, the Aspero doesn’t. And you’ve already put the work into the Crux.

Yeah – it’s significantly slower than any of the mountain bikes. It loses around 2 minutes per hour to the mountain bikes in our Jungle Circuit tests.

When I ride my road bikes on the cobbled roads introduced a couple months ago, it seems that the bike slows down a bit. Is the bike performance on cobbles more like dirt or more like pavement? Which would be better bikes on the cobbled courses — gravel or road?
There is a Crr table in zwiftinsider somewhere if you search for that (in fact there are a couple, since Zwift updated their Crr values there is a stale one and a new one) if you search for Crr in the site search you should find it. And yes the cobbles have a higher Crr than tarmac, it’s like having a 1% hill or similar in its effect. Good spot to sneak attack, or be on your toes for someone else to do one if you’re on the limit
I would like to see how the Cadex TT compares to the gravel bikes. At some point we will be doing a TTT around the jungle again.
I’d be very curious to see your research with the Temple KOM, Sgurr (like “City and the Sgurr”) or the Watopia routes that go into the Jungle loop to see if the “gravel vs road bike” result is the same as what is currently calculated on zwifterbikes.app. Because right now zwifterbikes.app is telling me that even just isolating toe the gravel side of the Sgurr on the KOM segment only, the SL8 beats a gravel bike and that seems…not right
Sounds like we couild be back to where a gravel bike is quickest around Mech Isle lap, like it was in the early days of it being used for the Zwift TT Club.
Similar also for the Tiny Race down the ~5Km dirt descent and finishing before the first tarmac hairpin on Alpe Du Zwift.
And the Tiny Race that went up bit of dirt (on Sea To Tree?), before turnning right to do flatish section on tarmac, before a left turn to climb small bit of Temple KOM.
Bring back Gravel Island!
Based on these results, how is the Cervelo Aspero mid-range while the Specialized Crux high end?? So its easier to level up the fastest gravel bike, you’d get all the performance benefits by stage 4, and you get the drops bonus.
Mid-range/high-end is based on the actual price of the bike, and the Aspero is a lot cheaper than the Crux. So there you have it!
So based on your charts its 880km to get the faster Aspero to full performance vs 1600km for the Crux. Amazing.
I get thumbs down for pointing out that its a much better deal to upgrade the Aspero? Angry Crux owners?

Just for clarification: wasn’t the Crux always a tiny bit slower on the flats but quite a bit faster uphill? I’d wonder if it’s still worth especially for gravel climbs like the Temple KOM. Also on the wheels: is it now changed that all gravel wheels perform identical instead of any named one being better that the stock Zwift ones?
Yeah, Crux is the best climber. I’ll be publishing a post soon with some test results on the Temple KOM, where I expect it to be the best choice overall.

I think a rational guess is that that particular app hasn’t been updated yet to reflect the current version of Zwift.
(I think a rational assumption is that you need someone kinda crazy focused keeping up with Zwift changes, which is exactly what we have on Zwift Insider. 😅)
A couple of years ago, zwifterbikes said they did not take the surface into account. Now they pretend to take it into account, by even showing which parts of the route is dirt and telling which bike they believe is better on each part, by how much. But I do not think they have the right numbers at the moment…

Zwifterbikes still says SL8 Stage 5 is a lot faster than Crux on Kappa Quest, but that does not fit with my impression.
My impression is that Crux is significantly faster, even before this situation changed (to the better for Crux and the other gravel bikes) in June, according to this article…
Could you give e.g. SL8, Tron and Crux a try on Kappa Quest in your testing? 😉 Just equip three bots and give them a mass start.
How slow is a gravel bike on pavement vs a road bike? I did ZRL yesterday with a gravel bike and it sucked. I wish zwift had a popup or something when the game started showing what bike was equipped to avoid these mistakes that could never happen in the real world and ruin a fun time.

Coming back to this because we’re climbing Temple KOM in upcoming ZRL. If you extrapolate the time saved over an hour to time saved over 5 minutes (approximate time to climb Temple KOM @4W/kg), the Aspero is only 10 seconds faster than the S-works SL8. That’s not to mention the SL8 climbs better, which will further narrow the gap. So based on that napkin math, doesn’t look like bike change will be worth it on ZRL Round 3 Race 3.
I might do some independent testing to verify, but it would be even easier if Eric did the promised follow-up 😉
Did you ever follow this up with the Temple KoM? Specifically thinking about this coming week’s ZRL race where we do multiple laps there. Wondering if my level 5 Crux is going to be enough faster over the 7 or so minutes of the climb to make the bike swap worth it.
I could just prorate the time differences compared to savings over an hour, but that wouldn’t take into account that the Temple KoM is steeper than the Jungle Circuit. If you didn’t do the test, that’s what I’ll go with though.

I’m C low, so way closer to 150 W than to the 300 W.
Since the gap for the Crux gets bigger in lower Watts, do you think it’s still not worth it swapping for C low/D riders?

I did some research on the best bike for the Serpentine 8, and my research suggested the Scott Spark RC World Cup. Paid 750,000 drops, then find out it’s apparently not the best choice after all…

I would really like some more dirt tracks, particularly flatter faster ones. Or is there any reason why we are forced to use gravel wheels, instead we could select road wheels? Most of the routes and events are on road pavement, makes it hard work on a gravel bike.
