Zwift Replaces Fuego Flats Tarmac with Gravel

From the editor: now that April 1 has passed, we’re adding a note here to let you know that yes, this was an April Fools’ Day post. But we’re keeping it up posterity… and because we think it’s fun.

Watopia’s Fuego Flats desert is the fastest ride in Zwift thanks to its long, flat stretches of pavement. But Zwift knows there are more important things than speed, and they’re always working to stay on top of cycling trends.

So it was no surprise today when Zwift announced their latest road construction (or in this case, deconstruction) project: swapping out Fuego Flats’ smooth tarmac for chunky, slower-rolling gravel.

Zwift CEO and Co-Founder Eric Min, clearly excited about the development, explained, “There aren’t many gravel roads in my part of the UK, and living in New York city’s concrete jungle didn’t give me access to them either. So I’m thrilled at the prospect of experiencing more gravel in Watopia!”

Tests and Trends

Zwift had tested the new gravel roads in stage 4 of Tour of Watopia, and Zwifters clearly enjoyed the ride, turning out in huge numbers to ride repeated loops of the new Handful of Gravel route. Apart from a few complaints about Neo’s road feel on the new surface (which Zwift says will be addressed soon), Zwifters seemed happy with the new gravel experience.

Gravel riding has grown hugely popular outdoors, especially in the US where races like UNBOUND Gravel and the Belgian Waffle Ride attract thousands of participants annually. As more riders choose to trade car-filled highways for quiet gravel IRL, Zwift is betting they’ll want to do the same virtually. In fact, Zwift’s March update included the Garmin UNBOUND Gravel Training Program which launches the week of April 11th.

Here’s a video snippet of the new road surface through the town of Saddle Springs:

Gravel in the Desert

Return To Roots

It’s not all about trends, though. Gravel is really what Fuego Flats was meant to be.

“Fuego Flats was actually modeled after California’s Death Valley,” explained Jon Mayfield, Co-Founder of Zwift and original developer of the game. “I only paved it because I wanted a fast place to ride my 2am virtual TTs. But here a few years later, it makes sense to swap out that tarmac for the gravel Death Valley is known for.”

One of Death Valley’s many gravel roads

Slowing to Smell the Roses

Discerning Zwifters know that each road surface rolls differently in game, with gravel rolling resistance (Crr) being higher than tarmac. That means this swap from pavement to gravel will slow Zwifters down on popular routes like Tempus Fugit and Tick Tock.

Lead Game Designer Wes Salmon acknowledged that some Zwifters may not like the slower virtual speeds. (It may prove especially irksome to the C. Cadence cruisers who like to sit in with the pace partner and rack up lots of easy miles in the draft of a large peloton.) “But training isn’t all about mileage,” explained Wes. “We think the journey itself is the most important part of the Zwift experience – especially the sites we see and friends we meet along the way. Just keep turning those pedals over. You’ll get their zoon enough.”

This view was echoed by Mark Cote, Zwift’s Senior Director of Content Programming. He told us, “It’s a hectic world out there, and studies show there are real health benefits to slowing down and waving to friends and elusive roadrunners a bit more often. We think these new gravel roads will help Zwifters do just that.”

Not a fan of this change. If they want more gravel, add a new gravel road. Don’t swap out a popular road with gravel.

Very stupid move on their part. This messes up a lot of popular routes that run through that desert stretch, like Sand and Sequoias, Tick Tock, and the Waistband Loop. Just par for the course though — Zwift doing what they want to do regardless of how their subscribers feel about it.

We don’t need more gravel, especially not on Fugo Flats. Flats implies speed! This will ruin this nice ride. 🙁

It would have been much better to do a new gravel road rather than change this section to gravel. I do a number of zwift races which use this section. Quite a few TTs where an MTB could now be faster than a TT bike. It’s commonly use for TT races because it’s flat.

Nearly every week I also race Newbury Velo Road Race which runs each Sunday morning UK time. It’s a race popular for its longer distance over 70k using the big foot hills course. The first 10km and the last 5km use fuego flats. So do riders have to factor in a couple of bike swaps now for the race!?! Basically a good zwift race course used by many events now ruined.

Giving people variations is great, but don’t do this at the expense of the fun of many others. There is plenty of room in the desert for a new gravel route through the flats.

And here I was hoping that the news that they were limiting the bobble heads to specific rides as going to be Eric’s big prank (and they were really going to give them to everyone today), but this at least took a lot of effort to make the video.

Early April 1st move: All the new gravel bikes, and then that locked-in bike and tire choice for the Tour of Watopia stage.

Zwift develops in an agile environment, but its sense of what the MVP (minimum viable product) is for any given release is… questionable. We tend to get the bits and pieces of a larger intended feature in an order that’s just confusing — which almost made this 4/1 posting more plausible, you know? My first fleeting reaction was “Well, that makes the bikes at least a little more meaningful.” Only it didn’t. April fools!

This is about as bad as it gets. Fuego Flats was the place where I did most of my free riding and workouts (after Zwift ruined the Richmond Fan Flats). I’ll probably be taking most of my virtual riding time (and subscription payments) to another platform that’s more supportive of average riders who aren’t interested in doing heroic climbs.

Whoosh, right over your head eh? Maybe if they’d brought back the big heads it would have hit you? Anyway, even if it wasn’t a joke, what have gravel and being average got to do with anything or do you just feel entitled to rack up 40kph stats on Strava for your ego?

I’m a older steady “D” rider and haven’t seen 40 km/hr in at least a decade. I need flat routes to keep my efforts steady in my interval workouts. BTW I’m a Level 50 Zwifter with 4+ years of riding on the platform so I’ve seen all sorts of changes during that time—and IMO, a lot of them don’t qualify as improvements. I get that it was an April Fool’s Day joke, but it fits perfectly with the increasingly tone deaf decisions I see coming from Zwift’s management, which is why the article felt fairly credible on first read.

The internet’s default drive-by indignation sort of short-circuits perception, is my feeling. (Sites like yours are an example of why it’s still worth it, though.)

That’s odd… A few hours ago I did a warmup ride on Tick-Tock, then raced a TT on Fuego Flats. Both rides were on asphalt, not gravel. I was actually bummed during my warmup that there didn’t appear to be any of the usual April Fools bits going on…

Please… Don’t touch Tempus Fugit !!! It’s brilliant as it is today

Carrie

So does that mean tempus fugit is partly gravel then? There are many that like that route because it is flat and the easiest to do the long rides, or their first every 100K or 100 miles. PISSED AT THIS CHANGE!!! Better give us another long flat road for this purpose

Well, this complicates things for races on the popular Sand and Sequoias route. Maybe Zwift can implement a paralleling pave bike path or some alternate route through that area, perhaps farther out and along those train tracks.

Not into gravel at all in fact activelyavoid it. It just means I’ll have to ride other roads. It’s a shame Tempus Fugit was a favorite but not now.
