Updated Stats for 2025: How many Zwifters are at each level?

One year ago, we published a post showing the number of Zwifters at each level. I checked in with Zwift for updated numbers so we could compare year-over-year changes. Read on for details!

Percentage Breakdown of Zwifters By Level

First, let’s clarify what’s being measured here. When we talk about the percentage of Zwifters by level, are we looking at all accounts ever created? All active subscribers? Or something else?

Zwift supplied data for what they call “engaged Zwifters.” These are paying subscribers who completed an activity in the last 30 days. That’s what the numbers below represent.

Here are the levels of engaged Zwifters on July 30, 2025:

  • Levels 1-10: 13% of all engaged Zwifters
  • Levels 11-20: 19.3% of all engaged Zwifters
  • Levels 21-30: 19.9% of all engaged Zwifters
  • Levels 31-60: 38.4% of all engaged Zwifters
  • Levels 61-99: 8.5% of all engaged Zwifters
  • Level 100: 1% of all engaged Zwifters

Year Over Year Comparison

What kinds of shifts do we see when comparing current statistics to those from last year?

July 30, 2024July 30, 2025
Levels 1-1010%13%
Levels 11-2014%19.3%
Levels 21-3019%19.9%
Levels 31-6047%38.4%
Levels 61-10010%9.5%
Level 100*1%

*Last year, Zwift didn’t supply the number of engaged Zwifters at level 100. But they tell me the current number (1% of all engaged Zwifters) represents a 3x increase over last year. That’s a big jump, although it represents a comparatively small number of Zwifters! Here’s the good news: Zwift has seen this jump as well, and internal contacts tell me Zwift is looking seriously at creating more “carrots” for these level 100 riders. They haven’t committed to specific features or timelines yet, but I bet we’ll see something dealing with increased levels before the end of the year. Fingers crossed.

Apart from the level 100 increase, there is a clear downward shift in the average user level, with levels 1-20 currently constituting 32.3% of the engaged user base this year, compared to 24% last year.

Influential Factors

What factors are driving the stats above? Remember, those stats are for paying subscribers who completed an activity in the last 30 days.

First, it’s worth mentioning that Zwift gets a lot of new subscribers during “Zwift season,” and specifically around “peak Zwift” time of late December to early February. So if you were to look at these numbers in January, the lower levels would constitute a higher percentage of all “engaged” Zwifters.

Additionally, Zwift announced their price increase in May 2024. Many Zwifters had annual memberships at that time, with subscriptions that carried them through the summer months. Some of those members would have swapped to a monthly membership and paused that membership for the summer months of 2025, effectively removing them from the stats above. That may partially explain why we’re seeing a YoY decrease in higher-level Zwifters as a percentage of the overall audience.

Of course, many other factors also influence the statistics:

  • Zwift making it a bit harder to level up in July 2024
  • Week Streaks becoming a factor and Zwift raising the stakes with Streak Flair in April 2025
  • Subscriber churn rate
  • New roads to explore (or the lack thereof)
  • Compelling events (content) on the platform
  • A strong marketing presence during Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift
  • Stronger competition than ever from MyWhoosh, TrainingPeaks Virtual, and Rouvy
  • Local weather patterns

Your Thoughts

What level are you at? What strikes you about these stats from Zwift? What do you think are the driving factors around the numbers? Share your thoughts below.

I would love to see similar Runners by Level numbers, especially if they could break it out by non-paying vs rider/runners

I’m almost at 75 and a “loyal” Zwifter, largely because Zwift sponsors the Tour de France Femmes and promotes Women’s Pro Cycling.

You mentioned the influence of peak zwift season, December – February, and I think those numbers at the end of Feb or March would be interesting. Would it still capture the monthly subscribers that just fall off in the summer and keep their level rate?

Maybe it would make more sense to grab the stats for e.g. end of January each year, instead of end of July, to avoid the issues with riders pausing it over summer.

Level 76 and the effort required to level up is about right. Have stayed with the same frame for a long time now and it’s now fully upgraded. Zwift still pings heavier riders too hard but I have moved on and just ride the routes solo or do pacer rides these days.

Another factor: the launch of the Training API and various training apps integrating with Zwift. I know for my own part that when the TrainerRoad integration went live I went from using Zwift every once in a while for the occasional race or seasonal event to doing 4+ workouts a week.

I’m at level 88 and started Zwift when Wahoo offered three free months when RGT shut down. I find the game engaging and with Summer here being dangerous to ride in (30c at 5 am with the most reaching 45c in the middle of the day), Zwift is a training platform of choice.
As to fixes needed, robopacers need to be steady. Either speed or power. Following Taylor (1.0/1.1 w/kg) is a challenge. Power varies extremely (0.9 to 1.3) and that makes a huge difference.

Mark C

Zwift needs to make the Pace Partners ride TT bikes. That would smooth out the power because there’s no draft effect. Try riding a TT bike with Taylor or any other PP and you’ll see what I mean.

You can use a TT bike to ride with any robopacer in Zwift. You will get a no draft warning. I’ve ridden with Taylor and it’s a skill you have to master. Bernie is much better as his efforts seem to be way more controlled.

Without raw numbers (unless I missed them), it’s hard to say whether Zwift is just gaining a bunch of new folks, or is losing a bunch of folks in the 30-60 range (been here a year or two and then faded away). Some of those folks could be moving to the 61-99 range and replacing some of those riders who are fading away too.

The width of the categories are also unequal. Collapsing categories are helpful to show a trend / shift in proportions while hiding noise (i.e., no clear trend) in the data when the interval widths are equal across the board. Smaller category-specific raw numbers can be a reason for higher variability proportions between adjacent categories.

Zwift is on a downward trajectory. For example, as I’m writing this, there are 2,600+ riders on Zwift and 1,000+ on MyWhoosh. Zwift still enjoys a much larger user base, but software stagnation and recent price hikes have halted its growth. The platform is no longer expanding, and competition plus lack of innovation have made the decline more apparent.

I’ve been at 100 for well over a year, but carrots are always welcome. If they’re taking requests, I would say they could add more long climbs in the climb portal like the teased Stelvio, OR create a new longest route that surpasses the PRL

Not sure I need new roads, but I miss the big group rides that were much longer. Say 60 to 100 miles. Everything is short now or 20 laps on a flat course.

I’m days away from level 100 and expect the bike upgrade carrot will keep me engaged for a while, but a prestige system for levels would go a long way here. New roads are great but I’ve already got all the routes done and a new batch would be ticked off in a couple of weeks. The community side of things is what keeps Zwift the draw that it is, so working on that will hopefully be a major priority.

Surely the figures should be inclusive of riders whom are at what ever level regardless of whether they are currently paying subscription or taking a summer break. if people are at level 100 , they are at level 100

Unless zwift can filter the accounts that aren’t currently paying from the accounts that never paid this would be meaningless. The numbers would be heavily skewed by low level free trial accounts that won’t be touched again.

At level 100, each time we level up we should get 100,000 drops and then 200,000 and so for until they come up with levels 101 to 200 . 50,000 drops is nothing to get , compared to the drops for a HALO bike to upgrade . If we pay more in drops we should get more drops.Max out at 1 million after 10 level ups until levels 101 to 200 are created .New 100 kits to choose from . Instead of just 1 . Have 3 to 5 really nice 100 level kits that match the bikes . Zwift is so visual , create more looks .

I do think the initial purchase price of the Halo bike is high though so I imagine newer riders will have issues buying it.

Once you’ve bought it though it takes so long to upgrade you earn a huge amount of drops during the process. This is especially true if you do pace partner rides.

I don’t think they need to therefore up the 50,000 bonus.

I just want Mount Fuji removed from the Climb Portal and attached to Markui Islands.

A connect route from Neokyo with a “Fujikawaguchiko Bridge” crossing Lake Kawaguchi would be to die for.

In the town of Fujikawaguchiko they could place paranormal phenomena such as UAPs, super human-alien hybrids, time travelers and ghosts like in the NetFlix series “Hot Spot”.

I guess I can dream.

Interesting bit of data Eric. Thank you. I’m in the level 100 club and I love Zwift. I’m 57 and enjoyed completing all the routes and nearly all the portal climbs at all 4 difficulties. But I do crave those carrots. I’m also pleased there are other strong training platforms out there. Competition helps drive quality and continuous improvement, and rightly so for the paying subscribers.
Concurring with some of the other comments, I too would like new tarmac or gravel, options to buy jerseys, possibly options to trade in older bikes for new (I’ve got a few drops worth sat gathering dust in my virtual garage).
Der Matrose commented on a new route to surpass the PRL. Can you ask your nice friends at Zwift to replicate Mallorca’s 312 please Eric 🙏

Level 100 here. I will say that the “reward” for another levels worth of XP of 50,000 drops seems inadequate. I can rack up 50,000 drops in an hour or less with a pace partner. I really don’t have any idea of what it should be.

Been so long I can’t remember when I reached level 100. Been keeping track of the number of times I’ve gotten the 50K drop bonus. I am at an unofficial level of 166. I think Zwift should quit setting a limit on the levels, let folks level up at the current 20K XP rate, increment the level number and be done with it. My garage if full of stuff I never use. Rather see new roads, routes and challenges.

I’ve been Level 100 for a few months now and I’m starting to get a bit bored, I’ve only got 2 route badges to get (NYC KOM after party and Richmond Loop around), I’d love new roads and more carrots to keep me interested. There doesn’t seem to be as many Missions, in 2023 I did 24, 2024 I did 21 and this year only 9 so far, Zwift please introduce/bring back more monthly Missions. Also Mission badges for Cardio Crusher and Heat Check. Route badges for Climb Portal would be a good motivation as I hate doing climbs. Maybe have bonus XP and Drops for completing Missions, as drop have more value now with upgrades.

The post asked for comments regarding the numbers and thoughts. I’m within touching distance of 99 and going for 100 aged 71in couple of months. Zwift has been an amazing tool for improvement, enjoyment and motivation. It has developed into a new genre of cycling especially since Covid and provides a safe environment to race , train self improvement and create connections. It has been brilliant.
Getting to 100 and getting the badges provides impetus but I’ve never really understood why badges are not given for climbs ( especially when you have given so much to physically conquer them !) and why some routes are always forever event only. Personally I think they should be rotated open rides like the climbs.
Clearly 100 and beyond will need sorting if everyone keeps inexorably progressing.
Feeling you are improving whether from injury, illness or absence or utilising the platform for marginal gains is vital and Zwift has been brilliant at facilitating that and providing fresh ride challenges .
Congratulations and huge thanks.

I would be quite worried about these numbers if I were Zwift. Just under a third of people are level 20 or below and when you think the XP requirement to get to level 21 is only 36,500 now which is only 1,825KM which is less than 2 months effort without any bonus XP from not getting powerups and completing routes.

This to me says people try Zwift and then don’t continue with the subscription going forward for what ever reason. Its probably something Zwift need to try and figure out if they want to grow because if you can’t retain new customers things don’t look good because there are bound to be some higher level longer term Zwifters also leaving.

Personally I enjoy Zwift and am Level 100 and have been since about 3 months after they added the extra levels and have no desire to go else where. I think there is plenty to occupy me this winter with upgrading my Specialized Tron bike which requires 1,600 KM to get me to stage 3 (nearly as much as needed to get to level 20). I also have new PBs to set on all the routes as I have faster bikes and socks now.

I haven’t. My point is that a third of users are basically new (under level 21). Why is such a large percentage of users new? The only explanation is new users aren’t turning into middle and long term users as less than 10% are long term users (over level 61)

That or there has been a major influx of new users. Without raw numbers, which ZHQ will likely never make public, it’s impossible to really say.

This is it. Without hard numbers to compare this year to last, maybe there was just a huge influx of new users. Or maybe there’s been a significant lost of users in the level 30-99 range. No way to tell.

And you have to reason that Zwift decided to release these numbers, so either they are happy with their internal numbers or they don’t think we can learn anything from them that is negative (otherwise they wouldn’t have released them).

After two whole months on the platform, they’ve had plenty of time to appreciate the masterpiece that is: (1) zero innovation whatsoever, (2) racing so dysfunctional you’ll get a middle finger salute from every tanker, (3) a never-ending parade of bugs with every update—especially when something crucial like Bluetooth decides to take a vacation, (4) pack dynamics so brilliant that you end up working hard exactly when you shouldn’t (and loafing when you absolutely should), and (5) a HUD so delightful in its rigidity, it’s basically a crash course in creative profanity.

Colin

Although I think your comments are harsh I do think that people are probably making a decision after a couple of months not to continue for what ever reason and this will be different for different people but I also think price will be a factor.

Level 82 here. I remember when I was at level 20 something and doing my best to get to level 50 and suddenly Level 60 was the new norm. Then shortly afterwards a huge increase to level 100. I was disappointed at the time, I must admit. However, for me, level 100 is now an achievable goal. I appreciate that the Level 100 riders would maybe like to continue earning levels after 100, but I do wonder if that would put some of the riders on lower levels off, thinking maybe that a new level is totally out of their reach. I’ve done all the available routes, so new routes, roads or even a new world would be brilliant.

Completely agree. I was following a similar trajectory, working my way towards the top level only to see the goalposts move. I’m at 96 now, getting closer. Of course my total xp is well over the current level 100 requirement.
Adding a bunch of new levels is the last thing they should do, unless they actually make it unlimited. We don’t need more junk items with each level, that shouldn’t be a reason to only add a bunch more.

I am level 100 and would like more levels but I do agree that adding new levels above 100 would put off new members especially if we get access to parts (roads and equipment) of the game that new joiners don’t.

I think the new bike upgrades will also put off new starters as they won’t be able to buy and upgrade the bikes as quickly as they will lack the drops. Where as all the level 100 people have enough drops to spend 10,000,000 on a halo bike straight away.

its a tricky balance for Zwift to fix.

Lvl 100 here, and honestly I’m not sure that those who ride enough to have reached 100 need much of a carrot to keep on riding. 🙂 Probably a lifestyle at this point, though more carrots are always welcome. Regarding the numbers in 24 vs 25, it’s hard to say if that’s actually a decrease since it’s just percentages; you’d need to know actual # of riders.

Level 100 and some since, way back when. Have completed/collected all the routes. Moving through workouts, for some variety.

I’m not a Ludologist or digital anthropologist, but have observed very little evolution of late, stagnation has set in. There are more and more Zwifters levelling up and offering unique ideas here and on other digital platforms to improve users experience. All seemingly falling on deaf ears. Perhaps Zwift could create a random sample of Zwifters for a focus group to get a better understanding of where their resources could be best placed. (anyone ridden repack rush lately ?)

As for now having more levels (101 to whatever) is not a drawcard. However, 1. having a Stelvio, or Zoncolon, or Alto l’Angliru in Watopia (not portal) waiting for me at level 125, now that will get me on the platform. 2. I enjoy mass participation events where I can ride in a large blob of riders, some much stronger than myself. 3. For what seems like forever I’ve been asking for multiple collection on my route badges (x2, x3, x5, x10) that way I can go after my favourite route (x 50) or the entire suite of routes a second time. Do I have to create my own spreadsheet for this ? 4. What about an easter egg with each update Zwift ?
