My Top 10 Zwift Clubs Feature Requests

I have a confession to make.

I “own” one of the largest Clubs on Zwift, but I’m not sure what to do with it.

Zwift Insider’s Club has 33,012 members. But what can I do with all of them? I host Club events, but those see limited attendance unless they’re included in Zwift’s public calendar and/or I invest a lot of resources into hyping them up. I participate in the Club chat, but it’s so limited that conversation is hindered.

Zwift’s special sauce is its social side, its community. The heart of Clubs is to enable and build this community, to make what’s good about Zwift even better. But the limited feature set means even large Clubs have mostly become simple containers for events.

It wouldn’t take much to move the needle. Some polishing of existing features, some building out of capabilities, and Clubs could make a huge impact on the Zwift landscape.

I certainly don’t have all the answers. But as a Club owner, I know what I’d use! So today, I’m publishing my top 10 Zwift Clubs feature requests. Enjoy!

Races

Right now, Club owners can only create group ride and group workout events. No races. I’m not sure why races still aren’t allowed, but this seems like a quick add that would excite certain Club owners. Let us hold races, including time trials!

In a related ask: Club events aren’t currently “seen” by ZwiftPower, since they’re considered “private” events. Part of allowing Club owners to hold races should include making those race results visible on ZwiftPower, including ranking points.

Automatic “Public Upgrade”

It’s a well-known fact among Zwift Club owners that Club events get very limited signups unless they’re placed on the public Zwift calendar. There’s no clear system for getting your event onto the public calendar, but Zwift could make it happen so easily, while at the same time encouraging Club owners to advertise their events.

Simple signup requirements could be defined which, when met, automatically upgraded the event to public visibility. Something like this:

  • 5 signups 7 days prior to event
  • 10 signups 4 days prior to event
  • 20 signups 2 days prior to event

These numbers could even automatically “flex” based on Zwift signup traffic, requiring more signups during the winter months than in the summer months.

Of course, if a Club owner wanted an event to remain private to the Club, they could toggle that option.

Improved Club Event Visibility

Right now, events from your Club(s) are mixed into the overall events feed in Zwift Companion and not shown at all on zwift.com/events, even if you’re signed in. Additionally, Club events look just like normal public calendar events in your Companion feed. As far as I can tell, there is no indication anywhere that it belongs to a Club, even if you click to see the event’s details.

I’d love to see a “My Clubs” option added to the Companion app event filters, so I could check it and see only upcoming events from Clubs I’m a part of. Additionally, there needs to be some sort of visual indicator telling me that an event belongs to a Club, and which Club it’s a part of. Lastly, these same filters and visibility improvements should be in effect at zwift.com/events for logged-in users.

Recurring Events

Many Clubs hold similar events every week, but there’s no way to mark an event as recurring so it automatically gets created each week and you don’t have to set it up again and again.

Yes, Zwift’s events team can set this up, and that setting is in place, I’m sure, for hundreds of events every week. But this should be a setting that all Club admins have access to, as it would make the creation of repeated events much simpler.

More Configuration Options

I still have to email Zwift’s events team weekly to ask for custom powerup configurations for Zwift Insider’s Tiny Races. (God bless you, James Bailey and Leah Thorvilson!)

The problem is, there are lots of event configuration options that Zwift’s events team can access, but Club owners cannot. I’m not proposing we should have access to all of them, but just being able to use some key ones would let us create more interesting and engaging events, especially once Club owners are allowed to create races.

Configuration options I’d love to access:

  • Toggle which Club kit is unlocked when finishing an event
  • Choose from one or more pre-approved branded event banner images
  • Choose which kit should be used for the event
  • Race rules: category enforcement, hardware enforcement
  • Custom powerups
  • Assigned bikes/wheelsets
  • Category pen timing and visibility (important for races)

Clickable Member Profiles and URLs

I’m not gonna lie: this one drives me batty. Probably because members names are blue in the chat, which is the universal color for a hyperlink. But tapping on a member’s name or profile pic does nothing!

In a similar vein, URLs aren’t clickable when pasted into messages. I would love to share helpful zwiftinsider.com links when people ask questions in the chat, but I cannot.

Member Tagging

Right now, you can either allow notifications for all messages in a Club’s chat, or turn off all notifications for that Club. But shouldn’t there be something in between those two? Member tagging. Let us tag a member, and by default let people be notified only if they’re tagged. (Maybe even give the Club owners the ability to tag @everyone, although that may be playing with fire…)

These last three features are, admittedly, bigger asks than the requests above. But they would also take Zwift Clubs to the next level!

Custom Club Workouts

Zwifters can already design custom workouts in game. And we can host Club group workouts based on a limited library of in-game workouts. What if we could hold Club events using custom workouts?

My guess is this would require a big rework of how Zwift handles custom workouts today. But I think we’d see a lot of IRL clubs and coaches using this feature.

Custom Kit Designer (Or At Least a Pathway)

Voler‘s online 3D design studio

If I had a nickel for every time someone has asked, “How do I get my club’s kit into Zwift?” I’d be a millionaire. Everyone wants it. Very few get it.

How awesome would it be if Zwift built an online kit designer (like many custom kit makers have today) which allowed you to design a club kit for use in the game?

Barring that, would if Zwift could offer a clear pathway to getting your kit into the game? Something like this:

  • Your Club must have at least 250 members
  • You must supply the digital artwork in a format that makes it easy for Zwift to transfer it into the game
  • Approximate wait time is 1 week

You’d have Club owners clambering to meet the requirements and get their kit into the game.

Club Leaderboards

This is an idea I’ve heard knocked around Zwift HQ for years, so I know it’s on their radar. Leaderboard stats would include metrics like total distance, total climbing, average climb/distance (so smaller clubs could compete with larger ones), active hours, leaders jerseys grabbed, segment PRs set, and much, much more.

Club Leaderboards would be super fun and build Club camaraderie. There are actually two types of leaderboards Zwift could roll out:

  • Intra-Club Leaderboards: just for members of one Club
  • Inter-Club Leaderboards: all Clubs together in one place, competing using their combined stats

I’d love to see them both.

Your Thoughts

What do you think? Are my feature requests sensible? Do you have other ideas for important Club features? Or maybe you don’t see a need for more Club features? Share your thoughts below!

Totally agree on the clickable URL links. Only today I recommended your articles on solving connectivity problems to a member, but it’s so frustrating not to be able to give a clickable link.

I would also like to see improvements to club chat, where people can make posts and others can reply to that post. At the moment conversations get jumbled into one big stream and it is easy for comments and questions to get lost.

I agree 100%, our club has been hosting club events but the options for workouts are just too limited and we have been doing meetups instead, not ideal. There’s so much potential here but Zwift doesn’t seem to be prioritizing it.

Thanks for your comments about getting a jersey into Zwift – I was wondering how to do that.

I’m a club owner for the Zwift version of our local cycling club. We only have maybe 20 Zwift members, so the only one of these I (mildly) disagree with is that 250 minimum for a jersey design. Even our IRL club doesn’t have 250 members, so we’d never have that many Zwift members. If they’d come up with a jersey designer interface, though, the size of the club wouldn’t matter.

I do wish I could get more information when people requested membership, especially things like real name. I’m sitting on a few requests right now that I think are not people who are actually members of our IRL club. I have to go look them up in our directory, but if they use a fake name on Zwift, it’s going to be hard to tell.

That club leaderboards thing. Isn’t that the whole point of at the end of each ride them asking which club you want to save your ride to? Since that’s been a question that’s been asked for years, I totally expected those leaderboards to have existed by now.

I would like a club chat channel in the game, not just in Companion.

Actually, I think there should be many more in-game chat channels…

i think the issue with not being on the calendar, is it could be flooded with hundreds of events, and then it spreads out people even more. maybe if was an approved club event so zwift can manage them. but that mean staffing and i dont know how much resources they are willing to throw at it.

Agreed with all of this, especially the premise, as a club owner (albeit smaller). Thank you for putting together a formalized list!

Yeah baby! Eric for “events president” @ zwift headquarter!! Totally agree. Also the custom kit designer, i think that the size of a club doesn’t matter when they develop this feature. They can do this with a designer application where you can choose from a standard combination within a color palette, standard fonts to write the text on your kit. Just like you can now choose when creating your avatar’s face, hair, etc…

Would love to see a fix for the average speed issue on club rides where the rubberband is on and the number of riders is small. Frustratingly slow.

Thank you for helping this Zwift newbie understand what the purpose (or potential) of a club is in the first place.

I think “Club member messaging” could be helpful – and I mean notifications rather than just chat. I’m in the ZwiftInsider Club but I never go into the club as there’s not much to see. When I open the Companion app I’d be happy to receive an occasional message from Eric saying something like “Sign up for Tiny Races this weekend”. That’d probably get me to do more scheduled Zwift events. It might also give me more FOMO as the Zwift season comes to an end.

I would like to have access to all the routes including the climb portal, add in racing and you have club hill climb races.

I didn’t even realise that club events appear on the Events feed in Companion – it thought that the events i could see were all just official public rides and races! – which kind of proves the point that you are making, about the potential for club communities remaining largely untapped.

Thanks, yes I did gather that from your summary above. I’m a member of a couple of clubs who don’t organise events, plus a couple that do (including ZI) but I’ve never focussed on them as didn’t realise they were club events.

Custom workouts (and custom soundtrack,, why not?)

Great ideas all around. My personal wish is for much more event options. I love to try and come up with unusual events for my club but it always feels like trying to game the system to do something it isn’t designed to do. I love a good handicap race so I really want the ability to set custom pens with start time offsets

I completely agree with this. It’s such a shame that the club feature on Zwift doesn’t enable club organisers to organise club races more easily. Custom pens with start time offsets would be a significant improvement.

Totally agree on the custom workout aspect. This seems like it wouldn’t be very difficult for Zwift to open up the choice of club workout selection to whatever is in the Club owner’s workout folders (including Custom).

Is it just me, or is rubber-banding in Club rides slower than rubber-banding in a meetup? It sure feels that way.

I think they are all great for club events. One feature is love to see is the ability to allow ungated sprints during gated events. That way everyone can stick together for the ride, but then also be allowed to sprint for the banner then get a return to group message. It could be a selectable option when selecting a fenced ride. Ride On!

Wish list and a lot of the other suggestions in the comments look good to me, but I think an important factor most of us don’t really have much insight on is how many people actively do Club Rides more than once in a blue moon.

Whether we talking 80% or 20% or 1% affect (or at least should affect) how much priority is given to most of the potential improvements and new features suggested. It’s also entirely possible, for a variety of reasons, that a decision has or will be made to eventually replace Club Rides altogether with something that better fits most users needs/wants.

100% agree. I’m a member of a club that met every Wednesday night. The meet-ups grew from just a few to well over the 100 limit. Our chase races were crude using the meet-up function and discord. We started using the public space and it was very popular but it had lost its personal touch, it’s magic. I thought with clubs feature that we could recapture that but I was disappointed that races were not part of it.
Come on Zwift you’re leaving the door open here for your competitors.

What I’m missing is the ability to do my own custom workout with erg mode in the background of a club group ride, similar to what’s possible with meetups. The rubberband and the option to do a workout (or simply spin) adds a nice social aspect for clubs who have a lot of members following their own structured training plans

Good article, and I think you could probably write many more at a higher level on the glacial pace of Zwift’s development and innovation. In the case of Clubs and Category Enforcement, launching good ideas and then leaving them half baked seems to be a pattern.
I do think it speaks to poor leadership and strategy at the highest level. Zwift has the monopoly in terms of indoor bike / trainer users yet they do not take advantage of that. There are so many no brainer items and quick wins they seem loath to implement.
It’s madness to me that you can add and improve so much to Zwift using third party applications like Sauce and Zwift racing app – the fact they can do it from the outside, would imply that doing it from the inside wouldn’t be much of a stretch! And don’t get me started on Zwiftpower and the ‘integration’ with Zwift proper….

They certainly have the biggest market share of users against competitors by far, and that is Zwift’s biggest asset. I’d happily jump to another platform as I hear lots of great things about them in terms of racing, but there isn’t the critical mass to just jump on and ride with or against a load of randoms at most times of the day.

Clubs rides don’t allow the participants to bring their individual workouts they may have imported from their coach. A lot of the people on our Meets Ups like to join the meet up and then grab their workout or free ride. Right now Group Rides in the club format doesn’t give you that option or am I missing something?

Our club currently has 180 people. We would like to set up some aerobic cycling practice events, but currently the club cannot freely set up “fences” to ensure that all riders participating in aerobic competitions are in the same cycling group.😊

The clubs ability to link routes on the same map for club rides or public events. We have so many great routes that are one-way, non lapping. It would be nice to link one to another to be able to create events unique to the ride or event.

I am certainly not an expert on features and functionality of Zwift. My go to club and website for interaction with folks is The Herd. They seem to have a lot of things that are talked about in this post. I am curious as to why this would not be the case with all well-established clubs. Seems to me the members of The Herd are interactive on the site and show up in mass for events. The Saturday Thundering Turtles event had almost 300 participants this week. The Herd also has virtual as well as Kit you can order. They also have racing. I don’t know who the owner of the club is? BTW, I find you site very useful, but until I read this, I didn’t know you considered it a club on Zwift. That may be your first problem. It is clearly the best place to go for everything Zwift.

The herd was an early adopter of Zwift and grew up on Facebook and had very early public events while Zwift was in its infancy so they never had to deal with the club issues expressed by Eric. So not a case study of current situation.

Absolutely fantastic list Eric, as a small club owner I agree 100% with your current analysis of the state of clubs within Zwift. I feel that the club concept is only rudimentary at best. There is literally no way to grow a small club period. I’ve even gone so far as to make everyone mods so they can also invite friends. What is really required is visibility!! So your point of getting your events in front of the public is the only viable way for folks to discover your unique offering. HOPEFULLY ZWIFT actually acts on your requests but I’m not sure it’s within there interests to do so. Last point, the club chat is almost useless without the rich text features we have come to expect. Lack of Hyperlinks, pics, and limited text abilities all handicap the experience! I’m trying to run the club exclusively within Zwift but they make it almost impossible! Cheers and thanks for being our champion

Quite an interesting post, especially after reading today’s Zwift lab announcement. In addition to club races, and all the customization possibilities, I would really be interested in selective audio communications. Not sure how that could work, though.

These Club feature requests are excellent. As of September 2024 it appears that Zwift has now incorporated some of these requests and Clubs are a bit less limited. I want to get my Club up and running but feel limited with the Group Workout options/templates and don’t understand why riders can’t bring in their own workout into a Group Ride similar to a Meetup. Am I missing something? Maybe I should stick to Meetups? I’m happy our Club can badge hunt together, it seems all routes are accessible for Group Rides and Group Workouts, but if we do weekly rides we’ll be repeating the same workout templates fairly quickly. Access to the main workout library or customized workouts would be incredible. Thank you for your Zwift help and insight all these years, much appreciated!
