Bain’s Kloof PassAbout an hour northeast of Cape Town, Bain’s Kloof Pass is part climb, part open-air museum. Scottish-born Andrew Geddes Bain built it starting in 1849, and for almost a century it was the main road from Cape Town to the north. Bain had no vocational training, yet he’s now called the “father of South African geology,” and the pass is a national monument.
The road is still largely original, apart from paving and some minor improvements in 1936. Its most famous feature, which you’ll see on your ride, is Dacre’s Pulpit, a rock overhang that survived the construction blasting.
The Absa Cape Epic has used the paved climb several times, and it was the defining feature of one edition’s Queen Stage. For most riders, it’s a gentle climb, unless a strong headwind is blowing down the pass.
