Update: Zwift changed the color of the Aero Lightning Socks from blue to white after this post. Which was a good move – because white is so pro!
It’s time to talk about something very serious. I’ll get right to it: Zwift, like many cyclists, has a bit of a sock problem.
First came the Fire Socks, enticing us to work toward level 50 so we could sprint to flaming glory in the next race.
But that wasn’t enough. Zwift had to up the ante and create the glorious Confetti Socks so level 100 Zwifters bring a party to any peloton.
And now we have a third pair of socks: the Lightning Socks. Which is actually two pairs of socks, although you can only own one pair at a time. Confused yet? Let’s jump in and learn everything there is to learn about the newest socks on Zwift!
Animation/Effects Details
Lightning socks include cool visual effects which are triggered as you hit certain power levels. The power levels are multipliers of your FTP, and there are four levels of animation possible, triggered when you hit 1.5x, 2.1x, 2.7x, and 3.2x your in-game FTP.
If your current power is greater than 1.5 times your FTP, the first effect, called the “sparks and tire halo” effect, will appear. This works whether you’re wearing Lightning Socks or Aero Lightning Socks.
Ramp up your power to 2.1 times your FTP and the “tire size flash” effect will be added to the effect above. This works whether you’re wearing Lightning Socks or Aero Lightning Socks.
Why stop now? Pour it on and hit 2.7 times your FTP and the “full Aero Lightning effects” will be added to the effects above. (This only applies if you’re wearing the Aero Lightning Socks.)
There’s one more level! Hit 3.2 times your FTP and the “lightning feet” effect will be added to the effects above. (This only applies if you’re wearing the Aero Lightning Socks.)
Here’s a quick video showing what these animation levels look like in action:
How to Unlock Lightning Socks
Lightning Socks and Lightning Aero Socks are unlocks for Zwift’s Factory Tour Challenge. You can click to read all about that challenge if you’d like, but to summarize:
- Lightning Socks are unlocked when you finish the first part of the challenge by completing 250 power units. (1 power unit=riding at 1 W/kg for 1 hour)
- Your Lightning Socks are upgraded to Aero Lightning Socks when you finish the hidden and much larger second part of the challenge by completing 600 additional power units!
Lightning Socks vs Aero Lightning Socks
Lightning Socks only offer two levels of animation/effects (see samples above) and do not give any performance benefit. The Aero Lightning Socks make you more aero, and offer four levels of animation/effects.

You will automatically unlock the Lightning Socks once you complete 250 units in the Factory Tour Challenge. They will be added to your garage, and your avatar can wear them whenever you’d like.
If you continue on in the Factory Tour Challenge and do another 600 power units, you will automatically unlock the Aero Lightning Socks. These will replace your “basic” Lightning Socks, automatically upgrading them to aero socks with more effects.

Speed Tests
So, just how much faster do the Aero Lightning Socks make you?
We ran a test with and without the socks, using our standard bot (75kg, 183cm tall) at 300 watts. The Aero Lightning Socks made our bot approximately 12 seconds faster across an hour of riding on flat roads.

Will there be an option to turn off these visuals ?
I am happy for the people who love this and cant see enough of things like this, but I have no need to see this and would like an off choice.
Just don’t put the on your avatar then.
But than I would still see the lightnings on other peoples bikes. I like my screen as clean as possible, so I dont want it cluthered with lighning bolts going off everywhere in a sprint.
I understand people will like this and still want to see it, but what would it hurt to get a choice to see the visuals or not.
I agree Peter!
Just like we are able to turn of flair now, I would also like to have the option to:
Turn off tron bikes (show other frame instead)
Turn off confetti
Turn off ride on thumbs
Someone likes their coffee without sugar
Eh, yes, ofcourse.
I don’t get the analogy. You mean you live in a place where you can only get coffee with sugar, and you would be frowned upon if you would say you would like to have coffee without sugar? How interesting.
Yes, that is how coffee should be drunk
Do you go buy coffee and complain that it is brown?🙄
24 downvotes on something that would only affect my view on screen and would not alter yours at all.
You Internet people are really special …
be careful with your statements..
.. they’re also very easily offended..lol…
I would suggest to Zwift a new feature, very cool one:
1. — an option to force all the riders to visually neutralize their bikes, so that everyone one will ride a donkey..such a nice animal, and very quiet one, compared to monkeys..lol..
2. — an option to visually neutralize all the riders, make them as they are very neutral, so that all the riders will appear as a monkeys, chimpanzee, baboons, or something similar..
3. — as a result, all the users will be monkeys riding a donkey, beside the one that uses the soft.. lol…
the feature should not impact any visual effects of other people! this should be a personal setting and choice…
Eric, since you guys are way too bord in Maillorca , why don’t you discuss with all the big Zwift bosses this proposition and the timeline for realisation?…
here is an idea, stop using Zwift since you all clearly hate it so much
dude, you are the pot calling the kettle black – “special” is posting in a Zwift Insider comment section when you should be off blathering directly Zwift about your minutia
I understand your concerns. If a lot of people wear these socks in a while, it could quickly become too much.
But how cool would it look if you could split the lightning, fire, and confetti into different objects so they could all be used at once, which almost everyone would do, and your screen would turn into a party while you drive?
Dont forget the ride on’s and emoticons to fully cluther up the screen 😉
there are options you can set for a cleaner view. You can also turn off other people completely. However, I hope I don’t ride around you. You kind of seem like a buzzkill. I need optimism in my life. Not complaining.
I see even the Zwift community has it’s large share of snowflakes. How dare you not want a colorful animation to make you feel special? Shame on you, Peter.
I agree, I like my screen to look as real as possible, hence I never choose the Dinosaur course or the futuristic course , unless it’s an event/race , same with the daft headwear, Tron bikes etc ,I don’t know what it would hurt to have a no effects option …
Zwift isn’t intended to be the most realistic platform/game; it’s just not the point of it. That’s why it has powerups, coffee breaks, banded rides, and a perpetually hungry bear. So everyone asking for all the silly gamified stuff to be turned off is kind of missing the point. If you want a more realistic platform, there are other options out there.
That said, I agree that it does seem to be a relatively easy option to implement for people who want it (though I’m not a developer, and no-one here truly knows how Zwift is coded).
And (to Louie) people downvoted the idea because they didn’t like it, not because they are ‘snowflakes’. If you can’t handle people disagreeing with you, then you’re the sensitive one, not them.
Unfortunately, people just don’t get it. Just because you want things a different way than them, they poke fun and say you are offended easily (although it’s the other way around since they seem to be triggered by your request to reduce the cheesiness. funny how that works, eh?). Zwift added the animal in your pocket for consecutive weeks, and you can turn that off, so they are clearly getting enough requests to turn off this stuff off. If you want to use the silly stuff, cool. If you don’t, cool.
See… I’d like to take it a step further. I want to be able to turn off weather and time of day changes. It drives me nuts. I’d also love to see the ability to turn off ALL avatars. Just my guy riding whatever route I pick. And why can’t we do workouts in freeride mode? If we do a workout outside, you still have to manage the road changes.
But hey. lightning bolts.
You can do workouts in free ride mode. Just toggle ERG off…
No idea why this has got such an extreme reaction. I personally don’t mind too much but totally get where you’re coming from. At times the UI can become very busy with confetti flying, ride bombs etc. I’d get why people might want to quieten things down and focus on the cycle.
So true! Wish I could say yes, but I can’t. And besides, there are all those crazy happy people cheering on the sidelines. And they never seem to change their clothes! So unsanitary if you ask me, which I know nobody will. Uggg, happy people make me crazy. And the kids are on the lawn again. Ummmpppfff. But my garden hose was stolen so I can’t spray them. I don’t want to complain but there it is.
Would love to turn the visuals off. Nothing like racing with loads of flames, lightning, etc. flying around.
12 seconds! That’s significant. It’s like the difference between the popular allround wheels Zipp 454 and the faster Enve 7.8.
Holy Socks!
Awesomeness!! Wish they came in white tho!! This does not match my kit at all! … Decisions will be made 🤣😜
Yeah, these are going to be quite a lot of work to get. They should get a color slider.
Silly or not, the black confetti socks made me switch my kit to the black Norseman kit to match.
A slider would be pretty cool.
Wait, I read this article so you could tell me how to hack it in under five days and you have nothing yet?
you could go to Maillorca and:
1. — beg, cry, and hope that Zwift will give it to you for free
2. — you could invest 50-100 million $ in Zwift…and hope that amount will give you an option to receive a personalized object in game… monkey costume, clown one, or maybe even those socks…lol
For the Aero socks, it would be nice to have the option to turn off the animation. Racers will be torn here on whether to wear them…they’ll want the aero advantage, but having your wheel light up with bright flashing neon is a massive signal to your competitors that you’re attacking
So is the fact that they suddenly accelerate.
Some poeple aren’t watching at the right time.
Timing your launch and getting the jump can be decisive.
I don’t wear the Fire Socks for this reason and now, there are socks that have an aero advantage but I have to shout out loud that I’m winding up for a Sprint.
A simple On/Off toggle would be superb.
Came to say exactly this.
Maybe that’s the trade-off? You have to choose. Do you want the aero benefit enough to risk everyone knowing when you’re attacking? I was hoping it was only going to be a 1-2 second over an hour advantage so that I could just say, well, it’s not worth it. 12 seconds on the other hand is pushing the question of whether it is worth losing the element of surprise.
Then again, there are people who just don’t care. There were at least 2-3 people wearing the fire socks in my group in the ZRL finale race last night.
But would 12s in an hour be kinda minimal to almost nothing in a 20s sprint. Dont think that is worth the losing the element of surprise.
It would indeed be very small. But in a sprint finish, the time differences are very small…tenths, hundredths, and even thousandths of a second. In a photo finish, Aero socks could be enough to be the difference maker
You can probably change the FTP setting on your zwift profile to something high enough that the visual effects never get triggered.
But such a change (overestimating FTP) will cause other correlated metrics to lose their meaning and connection to reality (workload, TSS, fitness, etc.)
Important point, Artur!
Those shoes are sweet.
As far as I can see these are Specialized Mixtape shoes.
The thing is, I recollect these were available quite a while ago to FEMALE accounts only.
Any chance to receive these nowadays? @Eric Schlange ?
I don’t think Specialized ever holds any Mixtape unlock events anymore. My bot only has them because Zwift unlocked all the shoes for me a while back (long story).
mental note eric has a shoe fetish
False. Sock fetish! But you need shoes to go with the socks…
Agreed that those are super cool. Really wish there were a way to get them.
1) a 12s gain is a cool thing & idea … but a long way to get them for a 2W/Kg rider 🙈
2) flash lights not needed for me … I want to hide my attacks and protect my eyes vs flickering lights
3) PLEASE ZHQ, make the socks WHITE to match our kits & stuff much better
Is there a limit to the amount of electricity that can be accumulated in a day?
Limit of 4 power units per hour, 15 per activity. See https://zwiftinsider.com/factory-tour-challenge/
Do the effects occur when riding a Tronbike?
Maybe they are not visible depending on the color of the bike?Maybe they are not visible depending on the color of the bike?
I wish Zwift would give an option to change the colour, or have picked a neutral colour, my kit will be mismatched now 😂
Do the aero socks make you more aero at all power levels or only at or above a certain power level?
All power levels.
Why haven’t they got a length slider & while I’m moaning, why do you lose your multiplier if you change pacer, I’d like to work my way through as I warm up
waaa waaa weeee waaaaa!!
These socks changed to white socks instead of blue socks from some point.
I’m a desktop user, and it comes out in blue on tablet PC or mobile.
I just unlocked the aero variant and they’re white socks for me as well still
So it is and improvement of 0.33% over 300watt in 1h. That is like 1 Watt advantage over 1h. 😁.
It’s actually more like a 2.5-3W save over an hour, if you’re riding at 300W.
(Reducing your time by, say, 1%, doesn’t mean you’re saving 1% of your power… it doesn’t work that way, as it takes more and more power to go faster the faster you go…)
Hi, Eric! Do you have an *estimate* on the Power Saving @2w/kg and @3w/kg? And on the time gains for these both powers?
hi got lightning soaks but cant see no visual difference i have 700 watts and still seen nothing ?
i have just got these any ideas please
Do the aero socks only give a cda saving at a certain % of your ftp like the way the lightening affect is applied? Or is it a constant cda saving even at low power? The bot was riding a steady 300w – what’s its ftp? Or doesn’t matter?
Should be strictly regarding speed (kph/mph) and not never regarding ftp. Like Frames and wheels and in the real world. If it would be regarding FTP people would change FTP value for a race – would be horrific :D.
Would be interesting to see a test with project 74 fully upgraded and aero socks on.
