Virtual shifting is arguably Zwift’s most important innovation in the past year or more, and this is a move by Zwift to increase its adoption by making virtual shifting available to owners of compatible trainers at a low cost.
Trainer Requirements
Since October 2023, virtual shifting capabilities have rolled out to the Zwift Hub, KICKR v6, KICKR Move, and KICKR Core trainers. You must have one of these trainers to use the Click, although more trainers will support virtual shifting in the coming months.
You do not need the single-sprocket Zwift Cog in order to use virtual shifting.

Can you use this and the Zwift Play controllers at the same time?
Yes, have seen videos with people using both Zwift Play and these. They show up as another item to connect like a power meter, heart rate strap, etc.

Do you need a cog or other device to use the click or does this just work with existing cassette by controlling trainer resistance?
Seems absolutely ideal for me if it’s just a case of attaching to the handlebars and you’re up and running.
Not completely sure, but I’d think it’s plug and play. Just pick your chain line and go!
All you need is a trainer that supports virtual shifting. You definitely do NOT need a Zwift Cog!
Excellent thanks for confirming. My kickr core is compatible and I’ve been choking for virtual shifting (my poor wee hybrid has the same cassette and chain for like 4000km😭).
This will be a worthwhile investment come payday.
you’ll love it. my old crit bike/zwift rig barely shifts if at all. getting virtual shifting was a game changer. its a totally new experience. i was full on doing these races with my hand tied behind my back.
Speaking of which, have you heard anything on when it’s coming to the Kickr v5?
I Contacted Wahoo support last week and said a timeline of roughly when the v5 gets this which would be nice considering the core is cheaper model. Was told they don’t know when. Feeling a bit left out as this seems like some kind of stalling tactic to shift the v6 / kickr move and cash in with Zwift now they’re buds again – obviously i could be completely wrong!

Yes, you need Click or Play in order to do virtual shifting. Either of those, plus a trainer that supports virtual shifting.
Ok thanks I am leaving in Canada so I won’t be able to do virtual shifting even though I have a kickr core with the updated firmware.
Eric – Wahoo and Zwift both indicate that you need a v6 Kickr for this to work. If you don’t have a v6 Kickr …….
You need a v6 KICKR. Or a KICKR Move. Or a KICKR Core. Or a Zwift Hub. Those are the 4 trainers currently supporting Zwift virtual shifting.

You can use a standard cassette, just try to get a straight chainline.

The first – if you have a compatible trainer, adding this will allow you to use virtual shifting without making any other changes to your cassette etc.
Is there any other way to change the virtual gears – it seems silly to need to buy a circuit board in a box for so much just to do something so simple
Not yet. Hoping that one day they may add it to CA but not yet – you either need a click or play controllers

I’m a little confused. Is this a different item than the “Zwift Cog + Click Upgrade Kit” that I bought last fall? That purchase was definitely separately from a smart trainer. Or do you mean “separately from the Zwift Cog”?

FWIW, I always thought virtual shifting would be kinda cool but didn’t expect it to make such a big difference. Especially on my tri bike where I always had to get to the top of the aerobars to change gears. Now I can switch gears from the regular bars and if I ever want to spend a long time in the aerobars I can just move the Click up there.
Does virtual shifting work with a wheel-on smart trainer like the Wahoo Kickr Snap?

Got it, thanks. Accept that this is the requirement but seems like in principle virtual shifting could work with any smart trainer just by varying the resistance and derived power, just as (for example) climbing a virtual hill or riding on gravel vs asphalt.
so pre 2023 kicker core is not compatible. is that correct?
I’m pretty sure all Kickr Cores are compatible. All production years are running the same firmware. Fall 2023 is just when they rolled that out. Eric has wrote an article about it at the time. You should be good.
ALL KICKR Core trainers can do virtual shifting. You just need a Click or Play controllers. And current firmware!

When you predict, “more trainers will support virtual shifting in the coming months” will this be limited to additional Wahoo products or will it work, for example, with Elite trainers?
I know for a fact that Elite is working with Zwift to bring it to their trainers. Not sure on other companies (Garmin/Tacx would be the other big one…)
You can utilize the QZ app (available on Android/iOS) as a bridge between your smart trainer and Zwift, enabling you to use virtual gearing/shifting. Additionally, it allows you to change gears using Zwift Click or Play devices. For a while, this app has been essential for racing in Zwift if you’re using a mountain bike without a large enough gear range (for example, mtb). However, now you can also use it to enjoy virtual gearing with any smart trainer, whether it’s from Tacx, Elite, or another brand. Exciting stuff!

FYI – From Wahoo’s website –
“Will virtual shifting be available on other KICKR models?
We are working to enable virtual shifting for KICKR v5 (2020) and KICKR v4 (2018) in the future. KICKR v3 (2017) and earlier models use a different chipset and will not receive virtual shifting.”
Ah, good to know! That’s a recent addition of new info from them.
£46.50 (including postage to UK) is IMO just too expensive for what is essentially a button with a couple of micro switches and Bluetooth. Shame, as I was looking forward to the Click becoming available, but not at this price.
Universal Virtual Shifter is the best option for Smart bikes/trainers. If only works with Wahoo we will wait version 2
I just set up my virtual shifters on my Zwifter, which is cobbled together out of old parts. Now, my triple 10-speed crank with 11-speed cassette gives me 726 gears.
On the first few rides, I find myself doing mechanical shifts on occasion out of muscle memory habits.

Not yet. Wahoo hasn’t released their promised firmware update that would bring virtual shifting to the KICKR v5 and v4.

I bought the Click on the recent offer, but didn’t realise it needs to be BT instead of ANT+
I get frequent BT dropouts (which seem to be just the trainer thinking about it – the HR monitor stayed connected), but loved the virtual shifting between dropouts, so had to go back to ANT+
so my question is whether there is a way to have everything bar the Click on ANT+, so I can still use the Click?
There is not. Your trainer and the Click have to be connected via Bluetooth for virtual shifting to work.
I have a prosthetic on my left hand and I can’t change gears. I would love to order this, but I can’t find out how.
