Liège-Bastogne-Liège director Christian Prudhomme once described this, the race’s most famous climb, as “a Monument within a Monument.” While La Redoute is not the steepest or longest of the 10-12 ascents included in La Doyenne, it’s always a focal point since this is where key riders often show their cards.
In recent history, Remco Evenepoel’s devastating attack on La Redoute in 2022, and his subsequent solo to the line, marked a breakthrough moment for the young Belgian. It also saved his Quickstep team’s Classics campaign and revived La Redoute’s status as a focal point in the race.
A bit of trivia: a sign near the summit of the Côte de la Redoute says, “Here the greatest riders have forged their victories.” A lovely sentiment, but not entirely true, since Liège-Bastogne-Liège began in 1892 and La Redoute wasn’t included until 1975!
