Why the two-part name for this climb? “Puy Mary” is the name of the mountain – an extinct volcano – which this road climbs. The road itself travels through the “Pas de Peyrol” which is the highest road pass in the Massif Central.

First used in the 1959 Tour de France, this climb has featured intermittently in the Tour, with 2024’s stage 11 being its 12th appearance.

The toughest part of this climb is the final ~2.1km, where the average gradient kicks up to over 10%. Zwift’s version begins near La Chaze, much earlier than the IRL segment shown below, but we couldn’t find an IRL segment that was a better match. (It appears that the cycling world considers the final ~5.4km of the climb to be the true Pas de Peyrol/Puy Mary.)
